I had been without a saltwater tank for about a year or so when I started up a 45g tank recently. Since then I've noticed a strong saltwater smell from the tank that I never really noticed before on my other tanks, even though my fiancee says they did smell. I think it has been the cause of my allergies (sneezing, sinus's, etc) lately. I don't remember having allergies back when I had the other tanks, but my fiancee swears I did.
Anyone else have allergy issues due to their tanks?

I have had allergies for more than 40 years. I have only been in saltwater for 17 years plus six months in 1982.

My grandmother worked above a print shop for sometime and developed overactive nostrils. She is sensitive to more things than most people. They go on cruises probably 3 times a year, with one of those times being at least a month. She has never complained. Prolonged exposure is another issue. It could be progressively getting worse as time goes on.

Well yeah, I've always had allergies as well, but I have noticed a change since I started up this tank. I'm fine when I'm out at work, but now when I'm at home I'm sneezing and sniffling more.

what does the 45 have that the others dont? maybe algae is the cause? IDK what other things would go airborne and cause this...

I'm not sure either. I don't think it has anything different from my other tanks. Currently all it has in it is live rock, some snails, and some hermit crabs. I turned off the fan that was running in the canopy thinking that it was blowing too much air around, but no help.

Maybe something else that has caused this allergy that started up about the same time as your tank? New dog or new carpeting, plant...?

it may also be pollen... since this is the season for tree pollen allergies... (usually starts in January in the South). Maybe there are trees around your home that aren't near your place of work?

If i were a betting man, I'd go w/ seasonal allergies and a coincidence.
if I thought it was related to your tank, and I was a betting man, I would say tank = humidty (possibly) = mold?

Chris, that would suck being allergic to saltwater. Maybe you're just allergic to your fiance.

Has anybody ever noticed any mold int their houses due to the extra humidity?

I always wondered about the humidity creating mold not only in the house but in our air ducts. Warm air rises and unless your a/c is on, it's natural for that salty air to sit in the air ducts.
Anyway, I work all over central/south Texas so yes the seasonal pollens do get to me sometimes, but I'm still thinking this is more due to the tank for some reason. I haven't gotten any new furry pets or anything. I did get new carpet in one room a few weeks ago and they guy did glue the padding down. Still don't think it would be that, but I guess it could always be a possibility.

maybe it's just that when he ripped up the old carpet it spread around dust and pollen?
as a severe allergy sufferer the home i buy next year will be 100% carpet free. I am going to do wood floors upstairs, and downstairs will be acid stain concrete.
