Ok I have a friend with a predator tank that had their volitan lion tried to eat a very large damsel. Needless to say the lionfish bit off way more than it could handle and the damsel got lodged in its jaw. The lionfish tried to swallow the fish as well as spit it back up but it still seemed to be wedged in. After about 6 hours the damsel was still stuck and the lion was gasping on the sandbed.

Long story short, after 12 hours the lionfish managed to spit up the damsel but now its jaw looks like it might be broken and hasn't closed since. He's still swimming around a little but looks to have no control over his jaw.

Advice?

his jaw may have come dislodged. I don't know of anyone that would handle such a thing, but maybe someone does!

i have read about this on wetwebmedia before, but i cant remember what to do...

I tried doing a search for you, but all my hits kept coming up w/ lockjaw (which is the opposite problem, and caused by malnutrition from feeding krill to much)

ok.. found something.

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/cryptfaqs16.htm

wet a white cloth ( preferrably new and never used or washed) in saltwater - get it soaking wet.

then, obviously w/o hurting yourself or the lion fish, get it out of the tank and wrapped in the cloth.

then, gently massage the jaw back into place.

I am sure there are more detailed instructions out there, but i can't find them. sorry! :(

i think that is what the cloth is for, to keep the spines in check.

personally, i would be scared to do it. ;)

incase she does get stung...

remember, as hot a stream of water over the wound as she can stand to denature the venom.

well no one was stung, when she got up the next day the fish's jaw seemed to be back in place but he was still not swimming too much.

Sadly he didn't make it through the next night.

thanks for the help any way all of you
