I just got a clam yesterday and its not doing so well it doesnt seem. Its half closed up and the fleshy colorful part is a little receded into the shell. I floated it for like 30 minutes, made sure it didnt get in any air but still burped it just incase. My levels are all good except Ph is around 8. Im doing a water change right now but other than that is there anythin i could do?

what kind of clam did you get?

did you put it in the sand bed? i put a small flat piece of liverock under mine so it could sink in it's bissal filaments.

what kind of clam, what lighting? i would recommend the "drip method" for any invert, rather than floating. this gives all parameters time to equalize slowly, rather than just temp.

Its a Crocea. I have 4 x 96w PCs. Yikes, so i probably messed up acclimating? I put it up towards the top on the rocks. I just swatted a hermit crab pinching it, could that have anything to do with anything? If so, what could i do to protect it?

as long as all your conditions are good, about the only thing you can do is be patient now.

I bought a crocea a couple weeks ago at CB Pets and it's on a rock, in my sand bed, and it opened up nice and wide same day it was acclimated. If yours is still not opening up like it was in the store, my primary suspect would be to much current where it is at, because I dont think your sporting enough light to hurt a clam.

if a hermit or shrimp starts messing with it that is not a good sign, at some point you may have to decide if you want to pull the clam out and pitch it to avoid it dieing in your tank............... I second the drip acclimation advice....

Well im pretty sure its a gonner now :( Its unresponsive when something touches it so im guessing its already dead. I think ill try again with another one after i start using RO/DI water and ill drip acclimate it for sure :cry

you might have better luck with a derasa? i'm no clam expert, but i think it may do better under that lighting. they are generally considered the easier of the tridacnas.

I dont think a clam would immidiately react negatively to that lighting, usualy they decline over a period of time. My guess is that it was already stressed and the poor acclimation is what did him in.

Many just don't survive the packing/shipping/aclimating/packing/shipping/aclimating process.

Im pretty sure i didnt acclimate it correctly. Im ****ed cause that was the best looking one there at Wolf Reef (imo) not to mention the $30 i spent on it. My fault though for being dumb and just floating it. I want to try another but im going to wait until i start using RO/DI water first. Thanks for all the feedback

Croceas are probably the most 'finicky' clam in my experience with Maximas , Derasas and Squamosa being more forgiving. I have a derasa I got from a group order here several years ago at about 4 inches that is almost a foot across! Plan accordingly - croceas are nice in that they are small - I would reccomend keeping it high in the tank on the rockwork as they tend to bore into coral rock in their natural environment.
