Once I get the tank up and running I want to start thinking fish and order. I want to get a Sohal but heard they can be quite aggresive so was thinking of putting this in later. Any thoughts from those who've had them before.

Cliff, I have one "on reserve" at FA. I'm waiting to add one more tang (Achilles), and then add the Sohol last. Ace says "Cujo" has calmed down a bit and no longer attacks him every time he puts his hand in the tank. I also have a powder blue that is a bit bold, so I'm hoping that won't be a problem. I aclimate all new tangs in either my other tank or my fuge before they go in, so they are eating well and healthy.

hahaha, I think cujo used to be Pete's sohal, nice fish I hand feed him, never bit me, i think he didn't like Pete LOL
but yes Sohals are very dominat fish, mine rules his tank with a iron fin :)
hey Cliff hope he is the very last fish you ever want to put in your tank, or he will make sure he is the last fish added, with that said, I have added many fish to his tank after the Sohal and had very little problems, I must be lucky :)
good luck to both of you, they are beautifull fish

actually cujo in my tank is a clown tank - pretty much the same as a sohal behavior wise. one of the two reasons i can no add any new fish.

Never tried adding anything. I figured he would tear anything up the way he paced on patrol in my tank. He would actually go very fast along the glass and knock snails off with his head! I figured he was bored there was only 3 other fish in the tank that would run from him when he came around. I had to get him out cause the way he would take up every inch of my tank i knew he had already outgrown my tank way before i put him in. IMO Sohal's need a very big tank and its tankmates need lots of hiding places. Unless you can get Jose's off him put the Sohal last!

Mine is a pig when it comes to eating, but I have seen my Copperband take food from his mouth with no recourse. My Blueface picks on my Copperband much more than my Sohal. The Sohal keeps the Blueface in check. I once tried to keep a Powder Brown with a Powder Blue and that ordeal lasted less than a minute, and the Brown was sliced to pieces. My Sohal has never acted like he was going to slice another fish or me. Now my bosses Purple Tang has hated me for five years and if I have to go take something out of his tank he always tries to slice me. Reefvideos.com has several great videos, one on adding Tangs after a Sohal and another on putting mirrors on the outside of the tank so the others Tangs get so tired they leave the new one alone.

Cliff,
I got mine when he was small (2" - 3") and my Powder Blue gave him a hard time for a bit. Now the Sohal is two to three times as big as the Powder Blue and is king of the tank. When I added a Copperband, only the PB gave him trouble. Now that the Copperband is established he goes right up and snags food with the Sohal. Once when some of my Green Chromis started looking kinda puny, the Sohal did them in. Survival of the fittest, I guess. No issues with other fish. Good luck, they are a beautiful fish.
