so i have my new skimmer draining from the bottom of the cup into a 1 gal glass container so my fiance's question is "what are you gonna do if that overflows all over our carpet (she knows how bad it smells i tricked her before and got slapped ) so is there a way i can make the jug fill to the top or so and not overflow if i have some massive output from the skimmer one night?

Well there are aftermarket waste collectors. They incorporate a ping pong ball to shut the container off when it fills up to the top. The ping pong ball floats to the top to shut it off. Plus you can add carbon to the vent so you do not have the smell lurking around. I had one of these and it worked out great. Pricey though.....

Or you can just put your 1 gallon container in a larger container :)

You could use an ATO float switch(normally closed) connected to the power of your skimmer. When the overflow gets full the skimmer shuts off. I wouldn't even bother with a relay because who cares if you get voltage in old fish poop?

I just float a 3 liter bottle in my sump...

I like that idea.
I was going to suggest putting the bottle inside the sump also. If it overflows, it's just right back in the tank.

True , but you aren't counting on Murphy are you?
Watch the skimmer after you feed, after you stick your hands in the tank, after you add/dose anything...you will see that sometimes it will bubble like crazy. Having a collection cup, or a overflow drain , is a smart plan.
Sounds to me that your wife is pretty smart. ;)

Seriously, put it where it can overflow... For instance, in my tank, if the power goes out, the sump gets full. When the power goes back on, the skimmer will "burp" a pint or two...

figured it out
i took the lid put two holes in it and sealed it then took an extra airline from the top to the sump then in the strange case that it does fill then it will cause it to pump excess into the sump
