1st clam

My wife got a new clam for her 38gal. with a 250w mh with a CC bed i want to know where i should place this thing,feeding,yadayada ya know the whole nine yards. I read somewhere that snails and other stuff can get under and do bad stuff to it and to put it on a rock? ANY RESPONSE WILL HELP!

I had mine on a rock and it ended up burroing into the rock. When they do that thery're really tuff to get off. I recommend putting it on the CC bed. I feed mine with the rest of the tank (DT's phyto and oyster eggs) I also spot feed marine snow.

Crocea clams burrow into rock..... make sure there is PLENTY of light where you place it. Small clams can be spot fed..put the clam in a small container and put phytoplex or something similar in the container and they will filter the water. You could turn off your skimmer and feed directly into the tank as a 38g is pretty small. If the clam is larger than say 2 to 2-1/2 inches, then direct feeding is not necessary as they will get enough nutrition from photosynthesis. To direct feed in the tank, get a syringe (walgreens sells the ones that you dose medicine for children in-- they work great) and connect a piece of airhose to it....use a small piece of sraightened coathanger to attatch to the airhose so that it is rigid. then you can direct the phytoplex over the clam. I feed my clams about once per week or so, as they are over 3 inches, in this manner. BTW, clams need a very well extablished tank to survive, and the little ones seem to not fare so well, larger ones are better survivors.... Good luck, Erick..

i just use rigid air line attached to a syringe. no coathanger!

if the clam is a crocea be careful about direct feeding as this can clog the gills of the clam. usually it isn't neceaasry to direct feed any clam. Bowl feeding if the clam has not attached or using the coke bottle hat method is really best. Also in feeding it is best for the clams health to use a live based phyto. Chromaplex, phytoplex are all dead besed food sources and are not that nutritionally sound. Barry at Clamsdirect suggests PhytoFeast.
