i had just put in a new wetdry on my 55g and the pump is runnning ****** but one little thing is happening where my min water level should be my actual water level keeps dropping about an inch under that. i dont know if this is ok it seems fine to me but who knows. i have tried putting more water in the sump and it stayed good for about 2 days then started slowly dropping. anyone ?

That is where it will evaporate from. Or should I say that is where it will show. The tank level water will stay the same level now that you have a sump.

You just have to top it off. This is where if you have the room a top off kit would come in to play. Make sure you do not fill over the max fill line, because if you do and your power goes out, it is not going to be a pretty site.

Yeah welcome to the great joy of tank maintenance....i have to top of my sump about every other day due to evaperation....if you dont have an auto top off system this will become a routine part of your tank keeping.

just make sure that the return pump is under water. Another indication is microbubbles. if you see those, top it off. I usually fill it to the highest level I can without overflowing (with my wet dry off) and I can go several days without topping off.

Depending on how much light you have, and a few other things like submersible pumps or fans blowing on your water, you might evaporate a few gallons of water every day. That's normal.

If it is evaporation, make sure you are replacing it with freshwater and not saltwater.

would it be better to just use ro water

this would probably be best. if you have space, you can find a container to use to store 5 - 10 gallons of RO and use it as an auto topoff using a float valve and gravity or an electronic topoff sensor/pump. that way, you wouldnt have to add water so often. i know in my system, an average of about 8 gallons a day is evaporated out - i would never be able to keep up with it without the auto-topoff.

Just curious,
what were you doing when the water level dropped before you added the sump. You should still be 'losing' the same amount of water, it just shows in a different place.
