Ok, I just got my sump up and running with a weir that I made following the directions on melevs reef. My water level in my tank now is very high. It is touching the plastic lip. My question is how do I lower the water level? I of course have tried taking water out and puting it back in the sump but with in about 30 seconds it is back up.

You need to pump less water back up or release more water to the sump. Enlarge your weir or try a smaller pump. Can you lower your weir deeper into the tank?

I was thinking that about pumping less water up but I did not put a ball valve in the return because it was late and the store was already closed. Weir can not be lowered deeper or enlarged unless I make another. I had a quite one 3000 on it but I found out really fast that it was to big of a pump.

Theres nothing wrong with it touching the lip, but it gets to the point that it is almost going over the lip. It does not leak but if it gets over that first lip it is not that much further before it goes over the side of the tank.

Along the lines of what prof said, you could put a ball valve in the pump return line. My worry would be the tank overflowing.

If you can not lower the weir; can you cut the inflow area of the box in the tank, lower?

I can cut it lower but the water level is above it already by about a 1/4 of an inch already. I thought of that but figured it would not make a difference with it being above it already.

How would the tank overflow if I put a ball valve it the pump return line?

Did you use any flex tubing in the return lines?

No flex tubing.

Maybe cut a few teeth out of weir..

Nevermind. I just read Melev's page and I see it's a siphon overflow. Not what I was thinking.

SA-DSM, I was posting the same time as you.

The ball valve will prevent it from over flowing. It sounds like it is filling faster than it is draining. Thus, the weir is too small for the pump. You may want to shut off the pump tonight to prevent an overflow. Just a possibility.

If you have the ability to make another weir, you may want to make another really wide one. It would act like a calfo overflow. Then sell the first one or have an excuss to get another tank ;)
