Ok, this might not be the best place for it but I will try. Steve NaclH20 has started the first every MAAST-a-Thon for teachers. He has collected money and goods. He has asked me to help distribute the items as well as the money. So if you are a teacher and have a tank in your classroom or are looking to set up one let me know. Post either here or pm me. Teachers don't have to be Science (although as BIll Nye says "Science Rules") Math, HIstory, what ever, we will distribute evenly to all. Just let me know what you teach and where.

Bill Nye may say, "Science Rules."

But, Mr. Cool says, "Math is Money."

(And you can take THAT to the bank.) 8)

Any plans to extend this courtesy to the Austin area? Or is this just for SA?

I believe MAASTARDS are MAASTARDS no matter where they live. Just like teachers are teachers no matter what they teach.

I am maintaining four salt water aquariums for the Lago Vista Elementary School (3 tanks) and Middle School (1 tank). I am on staff but am not a teacher. My wife is the Science teacher for 6th grade at the Middle School. Right now I am looking for a hood for a 58 gallon aquarium (thanks to Kingfish Aquariums for their generious donation of the tank) and I will provide the light fixture. I also need livestock, salt, HOB filters, fish food and so forth to maintain these tanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I teach in Seguin, any teacher (from up north, New Bruanfels, Seguin, San Marcos, Austin, etc...) wanting to meet in San Marcos, Seguin, or even Buda, I would be willing to get the stuff that is donated to your classroom, and deliver/meet you so travel costs are minimal...

Just wanted to put in a big thank you for the hood that was built for me for the 58 gallon tank at our elementary school. I am finishing up staining the hoods and installing the light fixtures in it.

Now I am looking for some Carribean fish and inverts to go into it. I am donating all of the live rock but I don't have anything else to put into it. Anyone have a Royal Gramma or Pigmy Angel that they would like to donate to the cause? Let me know what you have and if you would be willing to do a trade.

Thanks.

I don't know how I've missed this thread.
Tater, if you are talking about that little PC light that was with the 30 gallon. I'm not sure of the age on the bulb / bulbs either.
Once I get the rest of the new tank up and running I'm going to see what I have left that I can donate also.

If it will help I have a 30g long aquarium that is just sitting here. If it can be used some where let me know and I will get it to you. Though it is a older aquarium(not sure of age) with wood trim design. But that is all I have just sitting here for the moment. As well it does need to be cleaned really good and it does hold water. LMK

BTW I think this is awsome. My mom is a Teacher in Abilene, Tx. So I can understand what something like this can do with kids.

Thanks for the bucket of salt. The prop tank is up and running and I'm bringing in frags from home to grow out with the kids. I just can't seem to get the MJ modd to stop bouncing around.

What do you mean by bouncing around?
I just finished one up but don't have a magnet for it yet, may use my magfloat temp to test it out.

technomex
Fri, 30th Mar 2007, 02:02 PM
What I mean about bouncing around is the impeller. It vibrates back and forth and never gets started. I did find out that the black rod on the front end of the prop begins to spin. If I hold on to the black rod on the end, it cranks up. If I let go, it begins to sputter. So...I held my hand in the tank for about 5 minutes just to see it work. LOL. Perhaps there is something I can jam into the acrylic end where the black rod touches to make it stop rotating.

Technomex, are you going to sell some of those frags in the prop tank for a fundraiser? I was thinking of doing that next year once I get some frags into the school tank. I was thinking of selling the stuff through MAAST, and using the money generated for upkeep and new stuff for the kiddos. If you do sell of some of the stuff, please let me know how it goes, so I can prepare for the 1st annual JBMS frag o rama next year!!!

Thanks, Erick....

What I had thought of doing was to do it for donations...like when you see the High School groups doing the car wash fundraisers. I would hope to raise enough for basic maintenance. Or perhaps even trades for salt and other frags to get some diversity....all I have right now is some zoa's from my tank at home.

I'll be one of the many giving workshops at Our Lady of the Lake on Thursday as part of the annual "Water Conference" sponsored by SAWS. It has been going on for a few years now and is geared toward educating teachers on many different aspects of water and how to incorporate the topic of water into the classroom. One of my two presentations is "How to set up and maintain a saltwater aquarium in your classroom and use it as a teaching tool". I was wondering if we had any MAAST promotional stuff (T-shirts, koozies, etc.) available that I could buy to give away to some of the teachers in attendance.....Just wondering.

Willing to donate the following (for classroom teachers only)...

1. Small button polyp frag.

2. Small GSP frag (it's actually brown).

3. Cup of sand for biodiversity (please bring a replacement cup of sand, I have a small tank).

4. Analog timers (I have three of them, not the greatest but they work)

The only catch is, I have flat worms (little tiny green ones). Other than that, my tank is good to go.

PM me if you are willing to take me up on this offer.

As school is getting ready to start, Aquarium Designs has donated about 100 pounds of live rock for our school aquariums. :D I cannot thank him enough (and all the other MAAST members) who donated supplies to get our tank up and running last year. I hope to post pics soon (were almost ready for coral frags!) A big THANKS to Aquarium Designs and Jason in particular for taking an interest in our kids lives, and educating them for future generations of marine aquarists!!!

well, it seems we had a power outage at the school this weekend at some point. it probably included a surge as well, and blew out the working 400 watt bulb over the predator tank, so even tho i just found a replacement for the bulb that burned out previously (thanks peter), i now need another bulb. it can be any color temp, but because there are no actinics, the higher the K the better. it is SE and could be any age as it is a FOWLR tank

now the sad part..... the lionfish that i donated (i raised it from a baby) didnt make it thru the outage. if anyone has a lion that is outgrowing their tank that they would like to donate, i (and my students) would greatly appreciate it. since there are other large predators in the tank, it would have to be 5-6 inches or bigger.

thanks for looking.

I have an old 45 gallon that I just broke down, since I wanted to replace it with a taller tank for my seahorses. It has been holding water for many years and has never leaked. When I cleaned it I realized the silicone on in the inside has deteriorated significantly. It needs to be have the old removed and new silicone applied. There are some scratches on the glass, nothing major. It's just a good old tank. If any of you want it for your class, it is yours. I also have a 30 long that needs a thorough cleaning and a metal stand for it that needs rustoleum. I would do all the repairs myself and sell everything, except after seeing Ace's class earlier this year I think this stuff could serve a better purpose. Let me know if any of you are interested.
