I am looking for a new pump for my 24 gallon NC. I currently have three pump in it; a Maxijet 1200, Rio 600 and Rio 600. I liked the flow but unfortunately the Rio's are cr*pping out.
I want to replace the three pumps with one pump and split the flow three ways. I want a pump that can put out 800-1000 gph. This may seem a bit excessive but once you split the flow it degrades quite a bit. Also, the different flows deflect off of one another.
HERE IS THE KICKER!!! The pump must fit in a compartment that measures 5.75"L x 2.5"W x 12"H. The size dimension is killing me, HELP!
The best I can find is the Rio HyperFlow 17 (http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=TA3551) 1090 gph @ one foot.
I don't really want another Rio pump but this seems to be my best option.
Please HELP me. :P

Why not do an external closed loop with a scwd? Like a Mag 9.5 or 1200?

I thought about this and I would consider it but... This is an existing tank that I don't want to break down in order to drill. Also, I bought the JBJ Nano Cube for the all in one design and I want to maintain that.
If I bought another tank, I would drill for a closed loop. No it's not time for another tank, stop trying to spend my money, lol! :lol

You dont necessarily have to drill, you can get the U tubes that hang over the top as returns, I use them on two of my tanks and they work great! None of my tanks are drilled...

Hmm... I still like the all in one design and would like to maintain it without any outer modifications.

Are you talking about a submersible pump to move water around, or does it fit in a special compartment off the back of the tank? If it's just a powerhead, you could think about a nanostream; probably you already have.
I'll never use a rio pump again; I got a vicious shock once and that was that. Amazing nobody's sued them.

I'm looking at this pump http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=TA3551 . It seems to be the all around best fit for my nano cube.

Try looking at Hydor's Seltz line. Small, affordable, European, and not RIO's.

I came across the Hydor Seltz pumps. I saw the Hydor Seltz L45 Pump @ 925 gph. This pump would work but I don't know the dimensions on it. I emailed the company and I am just waiting for their response.
Anyone know the dimensions on this pump?

Ok after a bit of digging (and almost giving up) I found some dimensions for the Hydor Seltz L45. I found the dimensions here http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/prod1222.htm .
15cm x 8cm x 12cm coverted to inches 5.9"L x 3.1"W x 4.7"H
Keepping in mind that I am working with a 5.75"L x 2.75"W this pump may be too large. My measurements were conservative, let me see if I can ge some tighter measurements.

Talk about cutting it close! Here are some more exact measurements of my tanks compartment.
Here are the dimensions again;
Pump dimensions 5.9"L x 3.1"W x 4.7"H
Tank compartment 6" L x 3 3/32"W
The length will work out barely. The width is very close too. When you do the math for the width the pump is a bit larger, 2/320" (yes that is correct 320).
Could I just sand down the pump this much?
Who thinks that I would be pushing my luck trying to stuff this pump in here?

Wait, I took a closer look at the picture and it seems like the base stand is wider than the body of the pump. If this is true then you could cut it and slim it down a bit. I still think you pushing your luck though. It would be great if a LFS had one you could look at.

Yeah, now that I have had a bit of time to think about it, I think I may be pushing my luck as well. Petsmart actually carries the Hydor branded pumps. I think that I will take a trip over there and see it for myself.

the other issue with this pump is, it looks like the intake is on the side, which in your tank would be right up against the side of the compartment - that would probably drastically reduce the feed to the pump.

I have the Hydor L25, L35, and L45 in Austin and the 45 is pretty big. Why not bump down to the L35 which is much smaller?
John
PS: The intake is actually right in the front not the side. That casing comes off and has a sponge prefilter on the inside.

I'd just use a couple maxi jets or put a nano tunze in the main tank

I have two brand new RIO's one is a 2100 plus and one is a 3100 plus. Never been used.

Matt mentioned this to me. This is one of my main concerns.

I really want around 1000 gph flow. I will be replacing three seperate pumps with one large one. The pump will be split three ways which means a degraded flow, on top of this I need to account for head loss. The L35 is ~750 gph the L45 is ~1000 gph.

I don't want any pumps showing in the main display area. I personally feel that they distract from the viewing area. However, I do like the reviews on the Nano Tunze's.

I would consider this pump but the 3100 is too large for the rear compartments. The 2100 is not enough flow <700 gph.
I think that I am going to purchase the Rio HyperFlow 17. It produces 1090 gph at 1 head foot using only 45 watts. Can't really beat these specs. Also, the Seio's were built off of the HyperFlow pumps. I have not heard or read any bad reviews about these particular lines of pumps.
