This is probably a dumb question, but I'm curious.
Is there any reason why this fixture wouldn't work for a reef? All I have used is PCs so I'm not too educated in the MH department.

Accually it will work but you won't get the right color frequency, you might as well get a MH for reef tank bc if you tried that , your going to have to buy a bulb anyhow. Come out at the same price but the reef MH will have a better reflector and won't be as heavy.

that light probably has a bulb in the 3200K-4000K range which will not do much for your critters

Okay I will be number three, the ballast will be enclosed within the fixture so the heat of the lamp and the ballast will be quite a bit. I believe the highest kelvin you would be able to order with this fixture will be 41K.

Not to mention that on Hellolights a nice retro kit is even cheaper.

What size tank do you have and what do you want to keep?
You will get what you pay for. There is lots of good equipment out there, new and used.

I have a 36 Bowfront I was thinking about setting up as a reef. I was just searching for used metal halides and that site came up. I figured it wouldn't work, I'd have to change the bulb, etc etc but I wanted to ask just in case.

I waited on the hellolights retro for over a month.. Kept writing them and they kept saying next week. After five weeks, I bought off reefcentral a used pendant and ebay a new pendant.
I would suggest checking out a few peoples tank and seeing what they have. Reflectors really make a big difference.

36 bowfront would look slick with a nice black Geisseman pendent hanging over it. hey, I just happen to have one coming up for sale in the next few weeks. :D
Let me know when and the price. The tank is actually sitting in the back of my SUV right now because I have absolutely no room among my other reef and crested tanks. It would be the fifth tank in my tiny bedroom. So its no rush on the lighting.
