if you can. remove the rock and scrub it with a tooth brush that stuff is pretty resilient if you leave any behind it will most likely re-grow

I had a small piece on a rock with a bunch of button polyps that were infected with flat worms. I did a freshwater dip and the Xenia and the flatworms died. I only had it in there for ~2min or so.
I would cut off as much as you can, then scrub it, and finally do a freshwater dip. There might be a better way but I don't know it.

Yes,
You can run a toothpick through the pieces you cut off and rubber band them to rubble and they will attach.

if you do cut it, it will grow back if you leave any behind. I usually cut it and within a few weeks its already growing new stalks.

Place rocks next to and on the stalks themselves and in a couple of days they will jump on your new rocks and you have frags you can sell or give away. This in turn will thin it out. Xenia only goes ballastic in tanks that are high in nutrients, phosphates, nitrates. It is a great coral for cleaning your tank thats why it works well in your fuge. I have one tank that my water quality is perfect and Xenia will not grow and reproduce it just sits there, tank number two grows but it is controllable, tank number three you need a lawn mower because of all the fat fish and the fact I probably over feed. I believe Xenia is one of the natural ways to control hair algae? Of course if you want to have less aggressive corals it is not.

I had to thin mine too and the stalks attached to rock I just used a thumbnail to get the edge loose and then it peeled off pretty easily without tearing. The branches I wanted to remove from the main trunk I just used a good pair of scissors to cut it off and set it in some rubble til it attached 2 days later.

If you do scrub your rock with a toothbrush, be sure and do it out of the tank and rinse your rock well before putting it back in. Any little peice that makes in the water will only grow again somewhere else.
