OK, this is my plan of attack on this beast. Give me any input as to what you think might and might not work out on this.
I've been fighting briopsys for quite a while and am tired of the battle (if you ever see anything getting it yank that little piece out right away before it spreads). I'm going to break down my 100 in the living room and salvage as much corals as I can into a 30 long that will be in the garage for the mean time attached to my sump/fuge that's already out there. I have a 1/3hp chiller attached along with plenty of heaters so that's not a problem. Along with those I'll save some crabs, snails, seahares etc. along with my blue tang, and CBB that is the first I've had that hasn't croaked on me. As far as the other corals attached to the rocks I will frag what I can and put them in the 30 long also, there isn't that much since I started with mostly frags anyways and several have gone south on me as of late. Here is where my concern lies and I guess I can deal with it as it happens in the 30 long. I want to chip away sections of the rock that have the algae growing on it but am worried that some may still come back. Any ideas on this and if it will work or is it best to just let the rock die and use it as base after several months of letting it dry out, or maybe do both, chip away what I can see and let the rest dry before puttin it back into a tank as base. In the mean time we'll be having someone remove the ugly carpet from the house and put tile in before putting up a new tank. This is where the fun comes in, the wife said I could get whatever I wanted once the tile was down as long as the stand and canopy are nice looking (Get ready Ace unless I find a good deal on a set).

I will be selling the existing 100gal with the VHO's in the canopy. I am debating the halides (two DE pendants) since I may change over to the luminarcs for the new system anyways.

Anybody's input that they may think is helpful would be great. I think I'm going to look at about a 135 since I like the 72 inch lenght and 18 width but it gives me a little more depth than a 125. Those are the max in length and depth that I'd want to go with do to placement, also if it has to be braced I'm hopein that it's a split braces for lighting purposes.

Thanks ahead for any input you may have towards this project.

Briopsys IME comes back no matter what you do to the rock the minute your nutrient problems start. I contracted Briopsys in a 30 gallon tank about 2 years ago and I went through everything to eradicate it. A product called AZNO3 worked the best but as stated, it came back.

Eventually I upgraded the flow and protein skimmer and it went away. Even today, if I slack on water changes or feed too heavily without Rowaphos, it patches up.

how much you want for the canopy for the 100 gal? w/or w/o lights

I have someone that has asked about the tank but said he may not want the stand/canopy so I'll let you know but it would be very cheap if it comes down to that.

Well since I have personally not dealt with briopsys yet, it sounds like a PITA~

Cooking the live rock may be a option but since people have said it comes back later down the road, it may be a risky chance to take (since cooking LR takes 6-8 weeks on average).

You said you were contiplating drying the rock out. If you do not mind the complete die off, why not boil the rock? Get a big propane burner for outdoor use and boil up some water and stick the rock in it for as long as you like :) It SHOULD kill off most anything on there. And if you want you could dry it out for a week or 2. After that get a tub and buy some cured (briopsys and algea free :) ) LR and start curing the rock again.

Whats your time schedule on the whole floor restoration/tank restoration?

I'm looking at probably having the temp tank up for about the next 2 to 3 months. Hopefully sooner but we'll see what happens. I was thinking about also bleaching but the boiling thing doesn't sound too bad either.

Bleach will do a better job of oxidizing the organics in and on the rock than boiling it. I would just put it in a trash can of freshwater with some pool chlorine tablets and leave it for a week.

That could work, I have plenty of pool tablets. After that should I just let it soak a couple of times in a clean water to make sure all the chlorine is cleared out of the rock? Like I said, time isn't a huge issue since it will probably be a two or three months before setting up the new tank.

pool tabs sounds like it will work better seeing as how you gonna be rinsing like you would of done if you didnt use pool tabs. Sounds like a double clean to me!

I know that if I see that stuff even start to grow on a rock or coral that piece is coming completely out next time. It may mean fragging a nice coral to bits but I don't want to deal with this again.

Well, the old tank is now broke down and what I wanted to keep is in a 30 gallon in the garage hooked up to a small wet/dry filter and extra powerhead for flow.
Now to finish cleaning out the large sump in the garage and getting the big tank out of the house and cleaned out good. I picked the worst day/weekend to do this project, just too cold to deal with cleaning it out yet.
Now the planning begins for the new tank. The sump design is not going to change actually, it has worked out great for me. Now it's just a matter of getting the exact tank design I want and stand/canopy. New tank I believe is probably going to be a 135, either brick or double braced so no brace in center where the third light will be and thinking Calfo overflow. Lighting I think I'm going to go with three 12K DE Reeflux bulbs and a pair of 6' VHO actinics.

I might but me and my son should be able to get it. Gonna let it set and wait for the weather to warm up a little before I bother with it. The sand was picked up last night along with the rest of the few critters that were left in there so nothing to die just harder to clean I suppose.
