I am adding a drain to my ASM G-3 and I was told to use Marine Goop to secure the fitting. Well all I can find is Plumbers goop and my local Lowes does not carry Marine Goop just the Plumbers. So I am just wanting to know if it is the same and will work.

Thanks

I don't think so. Plumbers goop sounds like pipe dope...

Marine goop is sold in a tube just like caulk or silicon. I have bouth it from Home Depot before. I have used it to bond glass to acyrlic in a sump. I don't know that I would trust it if I needed something leak proof.

Pipe dope is a semi-rigid compound, meant to stay in a more flexible state, Usually sold in a jar with a brush applicator. Most contain some sort of petroleum distallate, and are NOT suitable for aquarium fittings, IMO....Generally used on metallic fittings. The stuff is real nasty if you have ever worked with it, like real gritty white/yellow snot (sorry so graphic..). What does the plumbers goop container look like? Is it an epoxy type compound?

You could look for a small bulkhead fitting...

Goop is basically silicone. Goop is crap. Weld it if you can. Pvc glues and or solvents always make a better fit. If it is temporary a dry fit should hold long enough to decide if you want to use it.

Goop and pipe dope are completely different products.

Go to HD or Lowes and ask for Pipe teflon paste. There is a brand called Great White and another that is sold in small tubes. Both contain teflon that are used instead of teflon tape and can be used on potable water situations. I've been using it for years with no problems and it works much better than teflon tape.
Once looking at it the stuff is called plumbers dope that erick was talking about and it's listed as non-toxic, and like I said I've been using it for years. Then again the stuff that you glue your PVC together with is not good for your aquarium if you don't let it settle in first before using it. Just make sure you dont' over coat the threads and you'll be fine.
Here are the three different ones that I've used in the past.

What we really need to know here is whether this is a threaded fitting or a slip, none is mentioned and it seems that people are giving advice for both.

Sorry It is a threaded fitting. I am drilling a hole in my skimmer cup for a drain line I just need something to secure that the fitting holds in place and does not leak. Since silicone doesnot adhear to acrylic very well.

So you have a PVC fitting that will attach to a acrylic skimmer part?

If so, why not get some Weld-On 40? I believe its #40 that can create a good enough bond between the two materials(with no particular force/pressure). Its the 2 part mix that Weld-On sells.

Possibly Matt can chime in here and say if it will work or not. If I recall he has used/mentioned this in the past....

yep, that is the weldon that will bond PVC to acrylic. a little superglue gel will work too if there is no pressure on the line.
