Anyone ever use this product around here? Been thinking about trying one for over a year now but have never met anyone that has used them.

No, but why would you want one?

By their own stats it doesn't produce water good enough for a reef tank IMO. Optimal conditions .1 mg/l po4 unless you use the add on alumina po4 remover...ends any consideration for me at least.

I was planning on adding the phos remover. Why would I want one? Because I hate the idea of tossing 75% or more of my water back down as "waste" when there really is nothing wrong with that water. I also don't want to have all these barrels around my house because a typical RO only puts out a trickle of water.

Set up your RO waste water like a drip irrigation system for your shrubs/grass/trees. My Live Oak in my front yard loves me.

Or just make a way to use it to drink etc. It's still cleaner and better than what's coming out of your tap.

I actually use the line to fill up some of the water in our pond.

Kold Steril systems are basically a .5 micron filter, .1 micron filter, a bunch of polypads and carbon. IMO it just doesn't make water clean enough for our systems. PM me or call up at the shop and we can talk about it Mike.

Well you can check with some water companies such as culligan etc. about getting a di system. Those are water in/water out and will give you zero tds water. They have different size di canisters and most will just charge you per exchange. More expensive per gallon than an RO/DI unit but might be what you are looking for.

Richard that was another thought I had actually had. I heard that they will process thousands of gallons per tank, for the larger sizes.

Man I wish I wasn't so cheap. Better yet I wish I had listened to my teachers like they told me to.

Ok I'll scratch Kold Steril from my list of "not paying for stuff I'm only wasting."

Cliff I'm confused, you say that the water being discharged from an RO/DI unit is cleaner than the water going into it? How so? I'd figure it to be more concentrated with icky stuff since 25% of the water passes through but 97% of the nasties are disharged. Wouldn't that make for a higher TDS in the discharge? And to fill my 400g tank from an under sink RO unit I'd have to drink a hell of a lot of water. LOL.

It depends on your source water and how much there is in it to remove. Ours went through 2 mixed bed 5' tall canisters every 1800 gallons or so off of our well water.

All of the water is being filtered thru the unit. The "waste" water is still filtered water. You can use this water for freshwater tanks, drinking water, washing machines and more. Sounds like a commercial. LOL!

Exactly what Steve said. Discharge water is probably about what you'd get out of this Kold Steril unit, maybe even cleaner depending on what filters they are using.

I'm actually looking at a storage tank with a discharge pump to use the waste water in my washing machine. The filtered water actually gets the clothes cleaner because of the lack of minerals.

BigBird you gave me a new approach to this. I hadn't really thought about using the discharge water for my large freshwater set ups. And since I do 100g water changes weekly in the 125g tank that might not be so bad.

I thought a few time about putting the unit under my house as I have a 4 foot high crawl space. Thought about hooking up the cold water supply to the inlet and outputting the discharge as the cold water to the shower or even the toilet. Then use a large holding tank for cleaned water.

I think you may end up with a water pressure problem there since the discharge water doesn't come out with very much force. Now if you had some sort of large holding tank with a pump like you'd use for a well or something that might work.

Ah but a toilet doesn't need pressure. Only volume. I'd just wonder if I'd flush the toilet enough times a day to make it worth while.

I would love to after the holidays... I always believe in fragging coral that you like to see survive in case something happens. I am optomistic (sp) that I don't have AEFW but will make an intense inspection of ALL corals this weekend. Others that have been getting corals from the same source for the same length of time don't appear to have them. So, we'll see. Once I know I don't, I have a frag of the Bigbird "Toxic waste" with your name on it. Here's a pic of the Mother colony...
