Very cool. This was a scientific study with a dye made especially for testing things like carbon.
NOTE that the left side is a decending to HIGHER cost!

Very interesting.
Is hydrocarbon the "two little fishies" brand?
I believe it is...

Yes, "Hydrocarbon" IS the TLF brand. I've always "felt" it worked the best on my system....now there's proof! But, now I'm switching to the Marineland Super Activated as it's just a little less efficeint, but cost close to 1/3 the amount.
Notice that KENT sucks the big one!

Yeah I think Kingsford briquets would rank a little higher than it!

the question is where can you get the calgon andthe super activated brands at.

Hey Jeff, I know Louis use to stock the Two Little fishes brand. Wolf reef use to stock the API super activated..not sure if Ed does now.
The Calgon is useless to try and find...I tried and they have dozens of carbons.
I've noticed the PRICING seems to be off some for this graph. I'm not sure if it was list price or what. But the TLF brand is not really any more (and less than some) of the others in the graph at some places selling it.

I've been buying the Marineland brand online from drsfostsersmith for a while. You can get it on sale their quite often for a good price.

Petsmart has the marineland 'black diamond' carbon.
I can't recal a marineland (or find by search) product with 'super activated carbon' in the title....
Looks like aquarium pharmaceuticals makes one with that in the name though:
http://www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Pharmaceuticals-Research-Activated-Carbon/dp/B000255NDM/sr=1-10/qid=1166463176/ref=sr_1_10/002-0252199-8849653?ie=UTF8&m=A9P1KZBSDQIPK&s=home-garden
Could we be reading the chart wrong?
Do you have a link to the actual article?

API (Aquarium Pharm Inc.) MAKES the "Black Magic" brand, one of which is the "Super Activated".
Marineland Aquarium Prod. MAKES the "Black Diamond" product simply labeled "Marineland" on the chart.

guys, I know that it's not on the list (because that is a relatively old chart if memory serves) but I have used several of the high end carbons on that list, and I have to tell you that the brand that richard and mark sell out at CB Pets just blows them away, even if your not using the hiatt method, that stuff frickin rocks.
Brand is Tri-base

So what's with all the worry about carbon? I never run it and have not in the year and a half my tank has been running. Was always told not to as it will strip trace elements from the tank.

i think that's a myth mike, maybe not 100%, but, not to the point of worrying about. water changes i think can easily make up for anything that is stripped. I mean, I am running 5lbs of carbon on a 30 gallon cube and I see no issues.
I have always felt running a little bit of carbon on a system helps w/ chemical warfare.

I have always felt running a little bit of carbon on a system helps w/ chemical warfare.
But then again that's what I thought my skimmer was for.....
I've seen a few tanks recently with the phosban reactors filled with carbon. Maybe I'll give carbon a try someday.

your skimmer removes protiens from the water, not all toxins are necissarily protien chains.
