Okay, I don't want to burn out this brand new Mag 7 pump I got but I need to reduce the flow its putting out. Where do I put the ball valve? On the suction side of the pump or the return side of the pump. I think I heard putting it on the return side is the correct way but I want to double check. Also, if anyone has put a ball valve on one of these have they noticed the pump generating more heat, because I would think it would be putting more pressure on the pump,

return side

I have used a ball valve on that acutal pump before with no problem.

I'm pretty sure using a ball valve on the output side will not increase heat; the pump simply slows down and pulls less wattage. On the other hand, pumps are cooled by the water flowing through them, so if the flow is a little slower, I suppose there is some theoretical loss of cooling efficiency. I've never noticed any heat increase from slowing down magnetic pumps, and an engineer at iwaki once told me it's actually good for the non pressure pumps to put a little load on them.

Cool, I'm going to Home Depot to get a valve and fittings today.
