I've been very intrested in starting a little 10g tank with just shrooms, and then moving them, once theyve grown, into my show.
My 10g setup as follows:
Filtration- Tetra tec 40 (guesing around 200-250gph)
extra movement-1-2 mj400 or 1 1200
Would this be too much flow? or to little?
Skimmer- some sort nano skimmer
crushed coral bed w/LRR or Extra existing sand then seed it with some from my tank?
LIGHTING, im really confused about this
The hood the tank came with can hold (max 100w) (2) 50w incanscent lights but I was wondering if that would be okay? another option would be to put those mini flourescent bulbs on it instead would it be any differernce? What about an open top with clip on lights?
Feeding- can some one with great knowledge reccomend great kinds of food?
Thanks
-Louie-
Some one suggested this something like this.

Would this be the best solution?
I dont want to worry about algea problems. I want the tank to basicly run its self.

I'd skip the CC for southdown, sugarfine, or aragonite. CC seems to hold to much detritus. The sump idea looks great. I'd skip a skimmer unless you get over about 30g of total volume. water changes would be more economical.
If interested I need some room in my house. I have a 20g curved glass cube with 50w PC lighting, Aqua C remora skimmer, about 15lbs of nice LR growing tons of sponges and some low light corals, 20lbs live sand I could sell if ever in Austin.

Yeah I was thinking of keeping sugarfine with Live rock rubble. I like that whole picture that someone on RC mentioned but I want a tank with out the hassels of my main. It would just endup being an extra 10g of problems. I have every thing I need to start the tank but How exactly is your lighting? PM with info

louie, I don't know if you followed richards sea horse thread or not, but I think a little HIATT would work perfectly for such a small tank, you could run it in a small filter. just my thought.
I am building a pico-reef this week. ;) I got one of those 1 gallon marineland tanks and a cheesy little filter designed for those red sea beta tanks which I will put tribase carbon in w/ HIATT bacteria and let her rip. those little tanks are designed w/ slits in the rim so you can put dividers in easily, I just had a piece of glass cut at lowes for 2$ and I will be putting that in making 1/3 of the tank enquipment area which will be hidden w/ wood eventually.
I am not going all out, I am just playing around.

Ok Now you've got me thinking. I like the whole no nitrate deal. Is the carbon just like any other regualr carbon or some speacial stuff. I've checked some of my catalogs and theres nothing. If I would do this would I just dump the 1.5lbs of carbon into the back of the whisper? or in a little baggie :skeezy

i would personally bag it. you'll need to take it out to clean it from time to time, and the bags would make it easier.
the carbon is infact a special type, it's called "Tri-base" and one of the three types of carbon is bio-available to the RightNOW bacteria used in the system. Richard can explain it in a more detailed fashion.

Richard, would you please explain the HIATT method in a simple way. as well as where I can buy the needed equipment.
Thanks

You can buy the TBPC and the right now bacteria from CB pets. That's the only place around here I've seen it. I set up a pvc setup in my aquapod (12 gal) last weekend. 2 tubes that hold a little over .5 lbs of the carbon in each, completely enclosed in the back chambers (i didn't want anything external on an all in one tank).
If you want more info, do a google search on 'hiatt tri base pelletized carbon'
htltd is hiatt's website.

Hey thanks for the site, sucked up alot of info.
Im going to see if I could get ahold of CB and maybe they can ship it over to my place. Do you remmeber the price for the bacteria and carbon

the carbon is roughly $10/lb, the bacteria is $12 for a bottle (enough for a 25 gal. tank)

It has not worked well just putting the carbon in filter bags in an HOB. You need the waterflow to flow through the carbon at a rate of 100 gph for a 10 gallon tank. If you want to do a Hiatt system then you would need to set it up correctly or it will not work. A carbon reactor or a phosreactor with the right size powerhead would work well as long as it is large enough to hold the 1.5 lbs of carbon you would need.
Regardless of the method you use it sounds like you don't want any problems but also are rushing to get the tank setup. Those two things are rarely compatable in this hobby.

Well thats true. Do stuff to fast it wont work out. I have every thing I need to set up the tank except for the carbon+bacteria. I was going to use a filter rated for a 40-55g tank which the flow rate is 200gph. So I would need the whisper20 rated @ 106gph? Or heres another Idea

The water would just over flow into the first chamber where the MJ would force water through a bag filled with carbon into section 2 ( there would be big holes in the baffel between sec 1 & 2) then the water would be pumped back into the tank by the MJ.
Would that work instead of using the HOB?
