better colors on sps

Is it possible to achieve better colors without a skimmer.This seems to be the case with my system.I have been skimmerless for about two weeks and colors on my sps have deepened.my colorie meeter is sill showing 0 phosphates.Strange,rare, or very possible? Has any one else had this happen?
