I have a film that comes and goes on my 150g w/sump and skimmer. There are days where it is bad and then it goes away. Any suggestions? Using same water, etc for over 2 years now.

Sounds like you need a lot more flow internally in the tank itself. It will help to break up the skim and move it to the overflow.

i agree with cafe, more surface aggitation and higher flow....are you running a protein skimmer?

How is your water getting to your sump, do you have a surface skimmer and if so is it large enough to handle the volume of water without leaving dead spots. If you do you can aim pumps at the surface to make sure all surface water eventually makes it around to the skimmer section.

I had the same problem with my 180. I immediately thought I needed for surface agitation, so I directed an MJ1200 toward the surface and overflow box. The problem is that it would fill the suface area in the overflow and then no more could enter the overflow. It went away overnight after about 2 weeks. I would skim it off daily but it would come right back.

I was like floating red hair algae, it looked white in the water but I used a paper towel to put it on and it was red.
