How much does putting your hands in the water effect water params? I rarely use lotion and usually use Lever 2000 bar soap to wash my hands, although I am a diesel mechanic, I can get my hands into some NASTYYY SHHHHTTuff! Who really uses gloves?

Thanks for your input.

I use either long gloves or a pair of long tongs to move stuff. I am not worried about the parematers more like things in the tank and risk of infection or being stuck from anything.

I have short laytex gloves as well as the long equine OB gloves (which leak).. I mainly wear them to protect against things in the tank... and to try to keep from any toxins getting on my skin.. I have other critters and don't need to poison anyone from handling a zoa...

I make my own soap so can't comment on the Lever 2000.. and i rarely use lotion...

There are times I do go gloveless .. but that's just to move algae or to get water samples... (always wash my hands before though)

I have the same type of hands as you do Reeferob. When I'm not doing the construction thing I'm building motorcycles in the garage.

I wash as best as I can with Irish Spring and head straight for the tank. I have absolutely no troubles with anything in my tank as a result. I've been getting some great feedback as well about the quality of my inhabitants and the care I put into it. My hands are in the water almost 20 minutes of everyday.

Do I recommend this to anyone? NO. It is up to each person to take responsibilty for what they choose to do.

I would suggest using un-scented dish washing soap in hot water before going in the tank. It does a good job of removing natural, as well as petroleum based oils from your hands. Hand soap have a lot of unneeded additives like fragrance and lanolin that may be more of a problem. Be sure to wash up to the elbow and rinse very well before going into the tank. Also make sure the towel you are using to dry is clean and not something that was used to wipe up kitchen grease.

You make your own soap? Got a kettle in the backyard cooking lye and bacon grease? Sounds like the Beverly Hill Billies.

I prefer to wear latex gloves for the shear fact that I get stung by my bristleworms when I don't.

I have some ultra thin (as in plastic wrap), up to the shoulder, disposable "reef gloves". Are these enough to protect from stings, or should I invest in some heavier ones?

those sound like my OB gloves.. they have worked for me so far.. but I don't have anyone really nasty in my tanks yet (stinging wise).. so maybe someone else can chime in with an opinion...

Like the ones Nicole wore in Simple Life when she put her hand in the rear of that steer.

I don't have any nasties in my tank. Never even seen a bristle worm. I had a couple of truly fiesty wrasses at one point and i think anything like that has been picked out. The nastiest thing I have is my mean as all heck 1" maroon clown.
