Depends on how often you use it. You really cant flush it too often. Once a week for ten minutes or so.

Ideally, you'd flush it for about 30 seconds just as you were turning it off every time you used it.I know of no one that does it that often however, so my standard advice is once a week is better thn once a month is better than once a year. Once a week for a couple of minutes should be just fine.

On the subject,..... I just got a second hand but nice 6 stage unit. All I recieved was a coldwater takeoff, a waste connector, some tubing, and a valve. How exactly would I go about flushing my new unit? this one came with the autoshutoff diaphram if that makes any difference.

You have to install a flush kit, check your favorite vendor, they should have them for around 15 bucks.

Do you know anything about the history of the unit? How long have the prefilters been in place? Same question for the DI resin and RO membrane.
How long has the system been out of use? Remember that if you allow the RO membrane to dry out it will be ruined.
If you don't have a tds meter you'll be hardepressed to know how the membrane or the resin is working.
Did you buy into a unit that has the small horizontal DI housing?

Sorry for jumping on this thread but my questions are some what similar.
Russ,
I am using a 5 stage system with an additional 2 di system on the back end. The brand is Spectrpure. I bought new membrane and filters 4-6 months ago. The tds has always seems to be high and the tank shows it. The membrane seems to be fitted properly. When the pressure is low it produces a lot of water but when increased it slows down, which is understandable to me but just wanted to put info. out there. I was thinking about replacing filters again. Have you used the rechargeable DI cartridges? Any thoughts what could be wrong with system? Do you make house calls? :wacko

Hi Eddie. A few questions for you.
1. What is the water pressure reaching the membrane?
2. Hopefully you have a tds meter - what is the tds
a. of your tap water
b. of the water after the RO (but before the DI)
c. of the water after the DI?

Listen to Russ. He's asking ALL of the right questions. Eddie, you are close to me, if you want me to take a look-see. I'm in Encino Park.

I thought all you really have to do to flush an RO is to remove the restrictor on the 'discard' water side?

(or crank up the output so most/all of the water is coming out the discard outlet)

Flush kits provide an easy way to allow the flow to bypass the restrictor - it's more convenient in most cases that removing the restrictor entirely. Both ways you suggest will work too.
