I saw in the post below that halides cost alot more to run. so about how much am i spending to run my 75 gallon reef? details.... 75 gallon, 30 gallon sump, remora skimmer with mag 3, heater, a few 1200 max jets and a few 900's, LIGHTS: Outer Orbit HQI/Compact Fluorescent....it has 2 halide bulbs,
mag 7 as a return but im about to upgrade to a mag 12. I think thats it? i havent really noticed a high electric bill, well last month it was way to high, but i think its because we left the AC on 70 just about the whole monthand we just moved in about 2 months ago so i dont know how well the AC works here, Or maybe its my tank? So whats the average $ to run this type of setup... any thoughts?

Well, I had a 40g at my house in SA running 1x400w HQI & 2x95w VHOs and after I moved up to school my parents said the electricity bill has been $100 cheaper each month!
You have to take into consideration the extra electricity it takes for the AC to keep the house cool enough too.

Just guessing: 150w HQI x 1.1(PF) x 2 x 12 hrs + 130w x 1(PF) x 12 hrs = 7,080 Lighting
Heater (200w?) 1 hr = 200 Heater
mag 7 - 70w + mag 3 - 35w + mp1200 - 20w x 2 = 145w x 24 hrs = 3,480 Power
7,080w + 3,480w = 10,560 x 30 days avg. = 316,800w / 1,000 = 316.8 x $.10 a KWH = $31.68 a month + Heater $.60 a month? Remember CPS brags on $.06 a KWH but then they add a ton for fuel and surcharges. I guess they got that from the phone company? My fuel and surcharge last month on a $225 bill was $75. So I should of only paid $150! In July my bill was $300 and my fuel and surcharges were $100

Oh I forgot to show 130w x 2 on the CF but it is in my calculations 3,960w for HQI and 3,120w for CF. TTL of 7,080 watts for lighting

Oh yeah I get to be the one that points this out.

http://www.maast.org/sections.php Right here on the old home page.

I used it a few times to est. my tanks. Everything was great and I upped my lighting by more than double. Uhm yeah so I thought I'd add about $10 a month to my very reasonable bill of generally $100 a month. Oh my. I forgot fuel delivery. I forgot taxes. I forgot "glutton" punishment surcharges. I seemed to eek it out just past the minimum for the extra fines. I saw a $350 electric bill last month. I'm counting on 2 things to help out. First I know for a fact they estimate my neighborhood and I've caught them, so maybe I finally owed a bit more. Seconf I'm hoping that my August AC bill really helped push it up there. Otherwise I might have a really nice reef for sale next month.
