I talked to Bryan at Purely H2O today about setting up a group buy and he gave us a sweet deal.

Optima Vision RO DI system (75gpd) http://www.purelyh2o.com/product.php?productid=16134&cat=249&page=1
TDS meter
And Free shipping!
All for $119

Also, we get discounts on Auto Shut Offs ($10) and other add ons. I will get a list and prices for these other add ons.

He told me the TDS meter just came out from HM Digital. It isn't on the web site yet but he will try to get me a picture and some more info that I can post.

I mentioned that the last group buy from them was for a 100gpd unit. Bryan explained that they don't carry those units anymore because they only had a 90% rejection.

This is what he explained to me:

He said something about some membrane and some other something that this one has and the other doesn't because.....HiFlow.....something.....filter.....so mething.....better.....something.....whatever..... , he sounded like he knew his stuff.

EDIT
Last group order was a little unorganized, so Bryan put this together for us. All the add ons are $10.

I just bought that exact unit from him for 165 so that is a great deal, he seems like a sincere guy but it took 22 days to receive my order and it was missing parts then another 6 days to get those parts.. maybe you will have better luck

Can you check on pricing for replacement filters too? I might want to stock up particle filters and carbon canisters. Maybe a spare 100 gph membrane too.

The best membrane, so I hear, is the 75gpd dowfilm membrane, with a rejection rate of something in the 98% area (I think) This makes your D.I. resin last several times longer than with a 90% rejection rate. My D.I. resin turned brown after less than 100 gallons and I was a little steamed, but I've since used it for at least another 100 gallons and it's still reading only 3 ppm TDS; it was zero before the resin changed. I'm not changing the resin for 3 ppm.

Bryan is a little scattered from time to time, I think his business is mostly not aquarium stuff. BUT, he's very knowledgable, and VERY generous and fair; his stuff is good and he'll always take care of his customers. He was late on an order of mine, forgot a couple of minor details, and when I reminded him he not only sent the missing stuff free but included some other things I was going to buy; a great guy to deal with.

75 Gpd is fine as I have a 50 Gpd now. So if he gets a price together for this I'm in.

I just received this:

"Here is 15% coupon code that can be used on the site for anyone that needs other items that are not listed :)

Pretty general but that should cover everything :)
All they have to do is enter this code at checkout. There will be a place that asks for a code at the bottom of the page.

Will anyone that ordered the group deal please shoot me an email so I can check the names against the orders.

Make sure that the name matches the Paypal billing name.
The units should start arriving Wednesday.
Typicaly in a group order we wait until we have all the sales in before shipping. Matt Im not sure how long your going to let this run. We only had a few responses so we just decided to ship them out :)

Send the emails to maastorder@purelyh2o.com

Thanks!

Membrane flush kit- This is simply a valve that will bypass the flow restrictor. Its purpose is to flush all the crud off the membrane. This should be done at least once a week IMO. Membrane will last
Auto shutoff- Without an auto shutoff installed, even though your not making any product water you still have waste water running down the drain 24/7. Install the auto shutoff and when the product water stops, the pressure builds and shuts down the entire unit. This is not needed if you don't have an auto-top off because you would just turn off the water when your done making your product water.
Plastic Float Valve- install this in your sump or a holding tank. the ro/di unit is connected to this and will shut off product water when ttank or holding tank is full. (This is an AUTO-TOP OFF).

To order this stuff look at posts on 1st page of this thread. there is a special link that will take you so the web site so you can order.

Good luck
:D Kelly

Oh this sounds like a great deal. I wished I had seen it earlier. Can any members recommend a proper set up to order? I like the price of the unit. Do I need a TDS monitor? What about a holding tank? I was thinking about putting mine on my sink so that everytime I wash somethign the tub can fill. If I do this what types of tubing and float valve do I need? I have a friend on another site that was putting RO directly into his sump with an auto top off unit but it stuck open and ruined his floors. So what type of redundant safety is available?

I've been thinking about getting one for a year now but could not justify spending $225 for the unit and another $75 in accessories at my lfs. Why would I spend $300 on a unit and $50 every 6 months if I only spend $260 a year on RO at the LFS? And typically since I buy something they would always send me with my water for free. I calculated once that 30g of water a week from LFS it would take me 2.5 years to recoup my costs of RO unit and constant filter changes. Oh and I like going to the LFS's (about 5) twice a week anyways to look at current stock.

However this seems like the type of deal to get me to commit to a home RO unit. I just don't know where to start for building a useable system. Being water conscience in the Edwards Aquifer I will not hook it up in such a manner that means I waste 90% of the water down the drain. I must have an automatic system that refills when I use the sink for other purposes. Any members that can advise me as to what fittings I would need would be greatly appreciated.

I would call Bryan at purelyH20 and tell him you'd like to get in on the order, and I'll bet he'll give you the same deal, but of course you'll have to pay shipping. That's exactly what I did last time there was a group order and I was a little late. Bryan is a great guy to deal with and I'm very happy with the filter I got from him.

Ask him all your questions about fittings, etc. Using R.O. water, regardless of whether you own the filter or buy it from someone else, means that about double/triple the volume of water you end up with will go down the drain, although you can easily collect that water and use it for watering the yard or plants. It's nowhere near 90% waste/ 10% product. There are lots of auto top off options; what's practical depends on your tank size, location for plumbing and water source, and how much of a risk taker you are!

Will call when I have a chance.

Waste water? I thought you could hook them up exactly the same as the ones you get from Hdepot that people use for drinking water. Those are the exact same units as almost every RO unit for sale to aquarium users only they use different filters. Those units come with a 3 gallon holding tank and drain down when you get a glass of water. They refill the tank when using the sink for other purposes IE, washing dishes. The "waste" water is that which you are using for other purposes and a small amount is diverted to the holding tank as clean RO.

Mon, 17th Jul 2006, 11:20 PM
Bryan if you could PM me any info I would appreciate it. If you could build me a system I just might bite. I do not know when I could actually call you as i work about 65 hours a week in construction and they don't like ya callin folks on their dime. Also I work a second job so I can have enough money to buy pieces and parts. To top that all off (after working an average of 90 hours a week) I am involved in a cancer charity and spend countless hours promoting that. My day begins at 5:30am and I generally wouldn't be able to call until about 10:30pm. Thanks.

OldSalty

Yea, you really need to call him, an RO unit doesn't even work like you think on the waste water. NONE of the waste water goes in the tank. As for the filters they are the same ones. The only differance is the DI. You wont have one on an under the sink unit. The storage tank is also used only in under sink applications and not on our aquariums.

Has anyone actually recieved their unit. The only thing I've heard from them was an email that they were going to send me a tracking number and they never did. Everytime I try and email I just get a return message saying they got my email and will respond but they never do. I cant get their switchboard to work and transfer me to someone when I try and call either.

This was a group order that ended Friday Guys. That is the reason we are able to give a deal like that. When the unit is shoipped you will recieve a tracking number.

The "other use" I have for the waste water is watering my garden. The waste water line is low pressure and it can't go back into a pressurized household line. The under sink units drain into the drain line of the sink or the disposal. Without a pressure differential between the household water supply line and the waste water line there wouldn't be any flow. Pressure in = pressure out = 0 flow.

Mine goes into the garden. My wife's hydrangea loves it. Its pretty much a marshy ground plant anyway and would be hard to keep alive in this climate without constant watering. If I ever get a pond up and running it may go in there. I won't have a problem keeping the alkalinity of the pond high enough.

PurelyH2O

Thats a good question. It would take two day from the completion of the order for the units to ship so I wouldimagine you should recieve tracking numbers today :)

Caferacermike,, when you came by to pick up golf clubs and you were in my reef room up on the wall was a 4 stage automated unit from purely H20. they are nice units except for some reason my DI cartridge is already half used up... i have my wastewater line running into my washing machine drain

PurelyH2O
Wed, 26th Jul 2006, 12:25 PM
Dont use the color change indication to judge the exhaustion of the DI. Use your hand held TDS meter to watch the TDS levels. Once it begins to go above 0/1 start looking at changing the filter :)
