I am going to South Padre Island this weekend for 5 days, and was wondering if anyone knows if it is any good for snorkeling. I am doubtfull that there are any corals and such, but what about hermits? What things, if any would be worth bringing back. I will have my boat and my jet-ski, so I can cruise out to some places in the gulf/bay if anyone thinks I may be able to find something cool....... Let me know your thoughts and experiences folks

Go to the bay area for hermits and snails. This is my area I live in PortIsabel so im always out fishing. I think out of all the acsess Bay acsess#1 has the most abundant. and if you plan to catch little bay fish perch exp. use one of those throw nets, these fishes are great to use as live food, cut them up and feed them to your reef

You might want to send Marlin a PM. He ocassionally dives at the artificial reef at SPI. He might know of some good spots.

I havent been able to go diving but have gone snorkling, and i dont really think theres much for corals. just on the hermits DO NOT get the BIG HERMITS, if they are in big pretty shells they can take a fish if you have alot of big ones together, stick to the small and medium ones. there is alot of grasses i'm currently using them in my fuge.

There is coral on the rocks near the end of the jetties. It starts at about 15 ' from the surface and continues to the bottom. It is a type of hard branching coral and it is white in color (I guess white is not color). There is also rope coral that is a bright banana yellow. The jetties has angel fish, tangs, butterfly fish. blennies, minuature groupers and many others. There are several types of very colorful damsels on the jetties. At night you can catch peppermint shrimp. Snorkling is best early in the morning on the North side of the jetties. Watch out for sea urchins, they are plentiful and can stick you bad.

There are many good places in the laguna to snorkle. Straight out from the Island convention center is always good. You'll see lots of small fish, stingrays, crabs, even seahorses if you look real close in the grass beds.

I dont think you have to worry about sharks. Just don't go in the water if you are bleeding.
I do know of a place on the jetties where there are lots of anenomies, all different colors. It's a secret place!!!!! :innocent
