My gulf caught blennie (not a lawnmower) has increased gill movement, is hanging out near the bottom of the tank, and now has a string of mucus I guess from the mouth. It has sand caught in it and is sometimes pulled in and then expelled again. I am prepared to get him to QT but have no idea what this is. Any help would be appreciated.

Update: The sand/mucus thing was something that was in my tank that the fish swam through.

I just counted his respiration rate and as near as I can determine it, it is over 140 per minute.

Hmmmm....

What other livestock is in the tank?

Thanks for the reply, Mark. Here are some facts about the tank.

This is a 75g that I set up end of April 06. I bought it used and moved the entire tank with all LS from Texas City to Austin. The other fish are a purple tang, flame angel, lawnmower, 6line and two oc. clowns. Three weeks ago my pt was acting different and had a white grain high up on its head. It ate fine, no more grains developed and the one dissappeared after a few days.

This blenny is eating, not as much as normal though. The high reps and maybe some lethargy seems to be the only issue. My wife noticed some red lines coursing through its body yesterday but I think it may just be its circulation system?

Can it wait 24 hours you think? Not knowing what it is makes me leary of tearing the tank down, stressing the rest of my fish out to chuck them all in a 20L for 2 months QT, but I will do it if I need to.

If it were me and other fish are acting normal and eating good I would venture to guess that you would have to pull alot rock out just to catch the blenny to put in a QT tank. That could cause more stress and problems than the current problem.

Still breathing what I would consider fast but I am new at this. It is still eating though and otherwise looks ok. For right now, I am glad I didn't tear the tank down! :)

did you just make a big water change or something else that may have caused lowered oxygen levels?
