View Full Version : Sea of Cortez Red Leg Hermits

I heard a rumor that one of the LFS in SA had a source for these guys and I tracked it down. I used to get these hermits ( Clibanarius digueti) from GARF (www.garf.org) a couple of years ago. They are the best hair algae and cyano eating critters I have ever seen. They also won't kill each other like some of the blue legs will. Leroy from GARF swears by them. I discovered them on GARF a couple of years ago when I was still in my "rookie reefer" stage and had had no luck in finding a cure for hair algae blooms. GARF was on of the first good resource websites. GARF pretty much invited the "clean up crew" concept. I ordered one of their packages and within a week my tank was almost hair algae free.

Well, I'm in need of replenishing my clean up crew. The last bunch of caribbean blue legs I got in are almost gone. As much as I love GARF and reeftopia prices, I would rather support the local LFS. So, I called Justin over at Pets R Us and he confirmed that he did have a source for these hermits. I worked out a MAAST deal with him. They are normally $1/ea., but if anyone wants to go together and get a bunch in he will sell them for $.75/ea.

He can place the order on Monday and if they are available, they will arrive on Tues. If anyone else is interested in getting in on ths order contact Justin directly at Pets R Us ((210) 543-7387). I'm ordering 100 of them and that was the minimum Justin needed for this deal, so I got you covered. If you haven't had a chance to check out Pets R us this will give you an opportunity to check a nice new shop in town. Check the Pet Store listings on the navigation bar (over there <<<<) for store hours and address.

Todd, I've never heard them called Scarlets. Try googling the scientific name in my original post. I think scarlets are the florida hermits but I'm not sure. I've only seen them referred to as mexican red legs, or sea of cortez red legs.

I'll take 10, too. Are you ordering them tomorrow? (June 26th?)

I've never been part of a "group order" like this. Do we pick them up from you, Gary, and pay you? It sounds like this one may be different, though. You can PM me with the details, or posting for everyone may be more helpful. Thanks!

GaryP

OK, we're up to 485.

Sherri - I think these are medium sized. Not the micro hermits, but not the huge ones either. I'll find out before the meeting today. Justin said they were "pretty good sized." I assume that he meant they weren't micro hermits.

Mr. Cool - No, you'll pick them up at Pets R Us. I'm just putting the count together for Justin. Everybody will be responsible for picking them up yourselves and paying for them. If they are available, the order will go in tomorrow and we can expect delivery on Tuesday. What I had discussed with Justin is that most if not everyone would come buy and pick them up on Tuesday so he doesn't have to hold this many hermits. I plan on being there when they arrive so I can just take mine from a bag and go home with them so they don't have to be acclimated twice. I realize everyone can't do that. I'll ask Justin to post to this thread with an ETA for the hermits at the store.

That's great, Gary! Thanks for putting this together. Good idea about acclimating twice. I'll try to be there when they come in, too.

I don't know if you got MattK's order... 30 hermits.

I didn't see the post listed here so I just wanted to make sure he didn't loose out :) .

No, I did't. He didn't post anything. That brings us up to 515. I talked to Justin today and he said he was going to order an extra 100 over what ever we get so in case someone doesn't get into the order he will have extra hermits.

He also said that he called the wholesaler and they have enough hermits in stock so the shipment looks like its a go.

GaryP
Mon, 26th Jun 2006, 09:19 AM
TruonkQ - You might want to call Justin and see if he will ship to you, or better yet have him drop ship to you. Thie disadvantage to that is that you will end paying both tax and shipping. justin's number is in the pet store listing over <<<<< there.

Rudy - I got you covered. That brings us to 425.

Hey Matt

Gary mentioned that instead of us calling the store individually, it would be better if Gary organized this buy and then gave the order to the store. Since you were in H-town I thought I would jump in there for you.

He should have over 100 extras. He ordered 115 extra crabs and then someone PM'ed me and said his tank wasn't ready for crabs yet and was going to hold off on the 30 he ordered.

I'd like to see us do more of this kind of thing. Not only with Justin, but any of the other LFS that would be interested in doing something along the same lines. I think its a win/win for everyone involved and a heck of lot easier then going a group order. We had this thing done in 3 days from the time of my first post to delivery. Anyone ever seen a group order done that fast or easy?

I'm sure the LFS see "speials" come along from time to time from their wholesalers. When they do, I would hope they would let us know about them and maybe we can get something like this order put together fairly quickly. It doesn't have to be just livestock. I recall a pretty good deal we did a few years ago with Aquarium Warehouse on Maxijets.

I picked up 20 the first day, and liked them so much I went back and got 20 more. I am always in for us doing orders Gary. I think it simplifies things when we get a LFS involved....

The group order I would like to see again is from Purely H2O for RO/DI with a TDS meter, was done ~6 months ago. I didn't need one then because I only had my nano, but now I need one because I have my 30g.

Anyone got a PHOTO of these? We just got back from the Sea of Cortez - far north end. Hermit crabs EVERYWHERE at low tide - their tidal range is over 15 FEET! Their legs were red only on the ends. I didn't bring any back as they would have been out of the water for 36 hours - and I REALLY didn't want to risk an unknown. Also, the salinity up at the north end SEEMS very hight. In any case, just curious if someone has a photo.
