View Full Version : Installing new sump (thanks Ace!) and need advice

I purchased my tank used and am upgrading the sump to something that can handle a real skimmer and has plenty of volume. Ace made it for me and I picked it up yesterday on the way to the SA zoo with my wife and 4y.o. twin boys. First, that was a beautiful tank, Ace. I felt like I had already had a good day at the zoo after seeing your tank. The Moorish Idol at the zoo was impressive, but sad looking.

The plumbing currently in the tank is soft tubing from the overflow and from the mag7 return. The mag7 supposedly has a 1/2" MPT outlet. I have no idea what this means. The tubing coming from the pump looks to be 1" OD (putting the tape measure against the tube and looking at its widest points is 1"). Here is a picture of the pump and shows the fitting from the pump, some kind of adapter and then the tube itself. I may be able to use the current tubing as it has some slack in the current setup but if I need new tubing, I guess I'd like to know if the 1"od is right and if you can tell if I would need another fitting on the pump end. I cannot tell what is keeping the tube on the fitting and wonder if it only has one use or something and would have to be replaced. Here is a picture I just took.

This post was xposted to RC but it was off the first page so fast it only got one reply from someone who suggested I needed to increase the size of the tubing. This is a little above where I wanted to go since that would mean new connections on both ends. My real concern getting home from HD with the new tubing and I won't be able to get it installed bc that piece of grey pvc where the tube seemingly just slides onto either won't release the old tubing or I have the wrong size.

Thanks for helping a newbie :D

Just cut the old stuff off of the grey fitting, and intall new tubing.
Since the fitting is underwater you could use a zip tie as a pipe clamp to hold the tubing over the grey fitting. Home depot lables the inside and outside diameter. If you measured 1" o.d. than the i.d. should be 3/4" which is what it looks like you have. The best way to solve this would be to cut off a piece and take it with you. But you can re-use all of the other fitting with no problem.

P.S. I believe the mpt just means that it is a 1/2" male threaded end.

Wow. That easy huh? So the tubing just slips over the grey fitting. Easy enough. I will just cut a short length off, reinstall and head off to HD. Thanks!
