New to the hobby here and wondering what I have on my rocks....
I got a piece of LR a few weeks ago and just noticed that there is something yellowish the looks like a squished cottonball growing on the back of one of my LR pieces that I did not see before.
unfortunatly I don't have a camera to snap pic.
may be over reacting but should I worry?

Sponge probably. Unfortunately, without a pic, identification is a difficult thing to do.

How old is your system?? If it has already cycled, get a cup of live sand from someone on here with an established tank and have a lot of patience. The hardest thing in this hobby is waiting for everything to work together as a system before adding anything that has requirments such as certain types of fish do. What type of goby are you looking to get??

does it look like this:

if so then it's a q-tip sponge.

Nope, what hes describing is a yellow encrusting sponge. They can be very prolific and sometimes a problem when they get near the base of corals.
Here ya go:

This is a sponge! :) Does yours resemble this? Even if it doesn't there are many different types of sponges.

as far as the organism goes it looks kinda like a small dome and its yellow with a cottony look to it. not really like the yellows that you have here or on the link you guys gave me.....man I NEED A CAMERA
and for the goby...I have just about fallen in love with manadrins...
Right now my system is still in the full cycle...need some more equipment and LR...have a 30 gal tank and only about 16 lbs of rock right now.
if you know anyone that has any decent old equipment they need to part with I am still needing a skimmer and eventually I will be looking to augment my tanks size with a decent sump and fuge if I can find one that will fit.

The mandarin is actually a dragonette and not a goby. Some people have successfully kept mandarins in 30 gallon tanks but I am sure they had pretty big, established refugiums. If I were you, just starting out, I would definitely skip the mandarin...get more LR and add a refugium.

eah I was planning to have at least 45-50 lbs b4 I add a mandarin.
as far as the refugium..what size would you recomend that I look for when the time comes?

I would think a 20-30 gallon refugium with LR, LS and some type of macro would be best for cultivationg pods. I would also wait a good long while so that you have a mature tank. I have read that these guys usually die within a couple of months due to poor nutrition so beware.

Right now the plan is to establish the tank for a while...going to wait for at least 3 months before adding any fish then maybe a mandarin after about 9 months to a year
ok at the risk of sounding odd...
when you mention having macro in the refugium...what are you refering to?

Macro algae...? Cheatomorpha? Halimedia? Did I spell those correctly :-P?

ahhh ok
so besides the actual tank for a fuge, the sand, rocks, and algea what other equipment would be needed for an effective fuge?
I really want to make sure that I set all this up right the first time and don't miss anything that I need.

Macro = macroalgae. You may have seen some macroalgae at the LFS. Macroalgae look like plants from the sea.
I think that it is time for you to do your research! :)
Here is a link to start you off: Wet Web Media - Refugiums! (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/refugium.htm)
Lots of good information here and tons of links to discusions at the top of this page.

Definetly looks like sponge. Harmless, good filter feeder if it lives.

Welcome to MAAST. My guess best is that it may be a tunicate or a sponge.

Macro=macroalgae (Good) , ppl use it in their sumps to control microalgae (NO GOOD), and something to cultivate pods and such, some fish will also eat certain Macros, I had a nice little clump growing on a LR and bought a sailfin Tang and it was gone within an hour of putting him in my tank LOL
