View Full Version : Regal Blue or Sailfin?

My tank is only a 75, so I know either of these guys will likely outgrow it eventually, but I'd really like to have a tang, and as someone said, it's not hard to find a home for a large tang like it would be if it were a shark or something.

If I got one of them at about 2", how long do you think it would be before it got too big?

Which (if either) do you think would do better in a 75?

Then there's just the aesthetics of which one would look cooler. Of course the Blue is the brighter color and has the whole "Dory" thing going. My tank is in the waiting room of my optometry practice, so that could be a plus or a minus. A plus because it would charm all the little kids, but a minus because I have a feeling we'd get tired of hearing, "Oh look! It's Dory!" :P

Personally, I kinda like Sailfins better (esp Red Sea) because of the way they flair their fins and I think they have a prettier face, but others (patients, staff) would probably like the bright colors of a Regal Blue.

So, opinions please. Words of wisdom? Other suggestions, including other tangs who might not outgrow the tank?

Maybe a kole or a yellow tang. Those dont get as big as others but still get quite large.

I really don't like Yellows. Maybe just because they're so common. Of course they're probably common because they do well in smaller tanks, but I've seen a lot of really bad looking ones.

Of the two, I think the sailfin might work better for your situtation. IME, the blues are often quite shy. :ph34r I have had mine for years and it is quite large but still hides when someone gets near the tank.

I have both, and they are fairly fast growers compared to others. I would think you could get up to two years out of one that size before you had to find a larger home.

The Regal(Hippo) is fairly shy, and might hide in the rock with a lot of unfamiliar traffic in your waiting room. The Sailfin (IMO) is a much more beautiful fish, just not with the striking colors. However, examining a Sailfin closely, the coloration paterns are amazing, and of course the fins are cool.

How do you know when it has outgrown the tank? Is it when it reaches x-number of inches long, or is there some other way to tell? Bumping in to rocks? >_<

I would prefer the Sailfin since the Regal is an ICK Magnet.
