I've been stung by a lion twice now as well. The first time he got me pretty good and the second time he barely got me. I think the main key is to soak your hand in as hot water as you could possibly stand it. The pain of the hot water is bad but the pain of the lion sting is way worse.

Is that the same method as if you slice your hand open with a knife, grab a mini sledge hammer and hit your foot really hard. You will forget the pain in the hand and concentrate on your foot. :blink

The poison from lionfish breaks down quickly from heat so that is why you do that. If you went to the ER they would do the same thing - if the doctor knew what a lionfish was that is.

I believe the process is called denaturing... and isn't it venom, not poison?

yes, it is venom which is mainly proteins. they denature in heat, just like the proteins in egg whites clump up when you cook em.

All venoms are poisons. Not all poisons are venoms.

Yup, when I got stuck I was in such bad shape my wife even called poison control and they said to use the hot water. They knew right off the bat about the lion fish sting which surprised me. I reacted much worse and was in screaming pain for a good 2-3 hours. I react a bit more to stings and bites though.

I've been stung 2 times and ran it under hot water. It hurt and my hand went numb but it wasnt screaming pain or anything that bad.

I got stung...wait, I don't have a LF and never have! LOL
But, I did get stung by a random anenome that came in on live rock. Cut thing I thought. Touched him when I got him and nothing happened...he was pretty sick from the trip etc.
But, when I moved him to my new tank last summer, the top of my thumb touched him as I placed the rock. HOLY MOLY F I R E baby and a huge welt. After about 10 minutes of jumping up and down I finally tried the hot water deal and it worked like a charm.......an I stay the HE double hockey sticks away from him now!

Todd, I wonder if the first time you touched him it didn't hurt because you hadn't developed the sensitivity, but the second time your body had had time to develop antibodies? Not sure if that's how anemone stings work, but I know you generally won't have an allergic reaction to something the first time you're exposed to it unless you've already been exposed to something with similar allergen signature.

Wouldn't the ELITE club be lionfish keepers who have never been stung? :P

Good one Richard!
PeeperKeeper, I think it had to do with it's nacromatasists (spelling) being all spent from the stress of coming on on "live" rock. It had time to regenerate them before I touched it again. :)
