I have a wet/dry and I have been taking the bioballs out real slowly. I finaly got all of them out like 2 weeks ago and everything was doing great. Now my Ammonia has gone up and my Green open brain is dieing. What can I do. My brother put half the bioballs back in. What else could I do to stop this. Thanks

Water change....fast. Up to 50% of your system volume.
Go get some amonia lock from LFS
Stop feeding for a few days.
Clean your skimmer
Add some Carbon
Make more salt water for another water change.

What he said...rinse...repeat...seriously, Todd is right on all counts (he usually is!) I think the operative word there is "fast".

Yes, I agree with everything that Todd said, he did say fast didn't he?

Anyway, after that is done, then it will be time to find what caused the ammonia spike.

It could have been from:

1. removal of bio-balls too fast
2. Something died and is decaying somewhere in your tank
3. without the bio-balls, your other forms of biological filtration cannot keep up with your fishload / waste and feeding habits. This may be due to not enough liverock / sand in your system.

Get some bio-spira from an LFS! This works almost instantly. It saved my freshwater tank many moons ago, and REALLY sped up the cycling process (like 24 hours) for my saltwater tank. I waited a while after that to make sure, but no more ammonia spikes. It is not cheap, but may be cheaper than all of those water changes. >_<
