I got a few of these kits and theyre pretty cool! They take a Maxi-Jet 1200 from ~300gph and turn it into an ~1800gph monster! Check it out:

there is a big mod on RC on this exact thing. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=790770 this is it split but has a ton of information this this. Plus I like the MJ900 better it only uses 8.5w vs. 20w on the 1200 900 is 230 and the 1200 is 295. still no bad but oh well. Let us know where you got it would like to know the price as well.

A guy on RC was selling them, but has since been banned for selling w/o being a sponsor.
He is setting up a website, www.tritonaquatics.com
He is actually putting alot of research into the kits and is updating his production techniques so Im not sure on the price for the newer kits, I'll shoot him an email to see if he has a set price. I think the new kits are going to be around $50, but well worth it IMO. I'll update the thread when I get a response...

What is the overall dimensions after the mod? Is it bigger than the original tunze? Has the flow been tested?
cpreefguy
Mon, 3rd Apr 2006, 02:46 PM
The guard that sticks out is about 3" long to give you an idea of the dimentions.
From what I understand the flow has been tested, but I'll get a confirmation.
longhorn_20m
Mon, 3rd Apr 2006, 02:52 PM
so really not much larger than a Tunze, the holder is what makes it look long with the reach it has. Really neat, I want to try these out, get us the hook up!

anyone with some injection molding experiance can build one! The bracket does look good, but I can mod my bracket to look WAY less intrusive. Maybe even look like a rock. Just buy you a propeller from Tower Hobby $2-4 a black PVC 1.5"x3" long and some hard tubing. Total cost is under $15 and if you make additional they will be even cheaper. I got the parts to make mine but I am waiting on the propellers from tower hobby to arrive. Not a bad mod. I got 2 1200's last week and the flow just from them in my 180 isn't bad. Can't wait for the mods, I may just have to run one! I was thinking about enclosing the MJ in foam and coating it with a light skim of Crete with only the outlet hanging out. You could actually make a fake looking rock out of silicone and aragonite then hide it in your rock work. I'm still debating on how I want to mount mine.

I was thinking about doing one my self. I was hoping I could find the CF rods here locally and the props as well but looks like I am stuck with tower hobbys myself. If the group order looks good I will be in for at least one for MJ900

the email I got from him:
Right now the kits are not available anywhere. The nylon kits as I've
mentioned in the past are almost finished and I'm really really hoping
to hear news this week that they are at the injection molder being
pumped out in volume.
Kits will no-longer be available through me directly. Because of the
array of products I have lined up I decided to simply become a
manufacturer of my products.
I've got some stores in various parts of the country who want to carry
the kits local and there are some online stores who will be carrying the
products as well. www.saltycritter.com is my primary distributor.
The kits will cost $49.95 ea. - I will be working with the Salty
Critter to offer club members group buys. That price is not yet
determined.
I will also be looking for a retailer in your area to carry the kits so
that they will be available local to you.
Warranty and support on these will go through me and not the stores
carrying the products. If there are problems you will be able to post on
the forums or contact me directly.
If anyone has questions in regards to the kits have them email me at
support@tritonaquatics.com

I'm interested but would like them to increase the cord length. Currently the MaxiJet has a cordlength of 5FT in my 3FT deep tank that doesn't give me enough cord to plug in the powerhead. Hopefully he will extend the cord to atleast 8FT. All the large Tunze pumps come with a 15FT cord.

What about a group order for all of the parts from hoppytower for the parts. Then get together and make the mods in a diy workshop? seems like this would be a heck of a way for MAASTARDS & anyone else to learn something good. Any thoughts on the idea?

I've made 2 so far and can help out anyway you guys want. I've got a bit of CF rod left, and I can pick up some more ultralight wheels. The CF rod will PROBABLY make 5 or 6 MJ'1200's. Props and such are already soooo cheap I don't think they'll do a group buy. MJ's would be really the only thing I think you could get a deal on. I have seen MJ1200x4 packs on ebay quite cheap.

I am trhinking about ordering the parts from hobbytower.com. Anybody interested in any parts? We could split the parts and shipping then get together somewhere ( my classroom after school one day) or anywhere else and attempt this mod. Just a thought. If not I guess I will be forced to go visit my little sister (50yrs old) :innocent in corpus and buy bug power lunch beer etc what ever it takes to show me how to do this. :lol
Any takers on parts?

when you ordering? I might be interested in going in halves on the CFR and picking up a couple of props. I was at Lowes the other day pricing the pipe. I think it was $7.95 for a 8' section(the grey kind). I planed on cutting the sections, slots and lip on my table saw with a couple of jigs. LMK

Thinking about this week probably by Friday. I thought that I would order the rod, 8 props and the glue from them Props where $1.05 each and the mod takes two. The rod is $6.95 for 2 24" pieces and the glue is $6.95 8 props the rod and glue came to $20.00 plus shipping. Think about it.

The Ultralight wheels fit the 1200's mod. They 1200 mod uses the larger 2" coupleing vs the 2" pipe. On RC I posted that these wheels fit the end of the coupleing great. Just drill out the center so it accepts the CF rod and you can easily center the prop. These wheels were found at an RC shop here in Corpus and are basically plastic wheels with a very small hub which doesn't limit flow

I would need you guys to mail me your magnet and impellors. They have to be modded so the prop stays on. I have 2 props here already for 1200's with single 1.75" props. If you guys want I can send just a big parts kit that you glue together if you can't have me do it. It's not that hard to put together, you just have to have a chopsaw or a drill to cut the slits in the PVC.

I am actually throwing a few of these together. I can cut the housings. I've have 3" and 2" 1 1/2" housings ready to mount for the 1.25" props. All parts bought locally(props, tubing,CFR,AL). I've successfully completed one mj 1200 WITH DUAL 1.25" NITRO PROPS. Throws a wide flow. I am upgrading to 1.75 prop for wide and long dispersion. It's an easy mod. I must warn though that the Mj 1200 makes a noticable hum as reported in the RC thread. I'm not interested in taking any business away from Bug but if you're doing it yourself and need a helping hand just hollar. Hey bug are you using the 1 1/2" coupler for the the housing on the 1.75" prop?
Bug_Power
Sat, 6th May 2006, 08:54 PM
Yeah basically it's a RC Ultralight wheel on the end 1.5" coupler, some 1.5" pipe and a 1.5" test cap. The impellor is a 1.75" dumas with hard tubing connected to it, then flexible airline connecting the prop to the MJ impellor magnet. The shaft is .98 CF rod with the endcaps of the original MJ on it.

I think so....basically if fits JUST on the rim of the coupling. Guys keep an eye on ebay and buy the 4 packs of MJ1200's you can get a pretty good deal that way. Unfortunatly I don't want to buy them myself. You can buy them and have them shipped to my address.
ou812pezz
Thu, 25th May 2006, 08:24 PM
I've completed 3 of these mods and finishing a fourth. Two MJ 1200's and 2 MJ 900's. Most of the parts like the prop, carbon fiber rod(2.5 mm X 610mm $6.49)(or stainless steel rod), ultra light wheel(1H01/51 2" GWSQ2205 $1.25) and carbon fiber tube can be purchased loacally at The Hobby Center on Frericksberg road(no shipping). The rest can be purchased at Lowes( test cap, PVC pipe and 1-1/2"coupling)and LFS(rigid tubing, airline tubing). With the MJ 900, I find a dual nitro hammer prop( HCAB 7750 $4.99 comes with 2 props) works best. It's quiet and throws a wide stream. Draw back is you have to drill out the center to fit the 3/16" tube. If you use the MJ 1200, I found the Dumas 1-3/4" prop(NO.3004 $1.25 per prop) throws the best stream. No drilling required. draw back is that it hums. Well if there are any questions just holler

hehe i made two my self, but it doesn't push out as much as i wanted it to. Works great in small tanks such as 90g or smaller. It pushes more water than a mj1200 though, but not 1800gph. Maybe it just need a better prop.
