Chiller owners, what temp do you run your chillers at? I realize consistent temp is what we are looking for, but is there an advantage to keeping lower temps(75ish) to warmer temps(lower 80ish)?

Partially depends on what kind of livestock you keep. If it's for tropical fish and corals, then I think 78 to 80 is good, I think I used to keep mine at 79. The main issue is making sure the temp doesn't drop too much over night or anything like that. Hardy fish will adjust to slow changes and increased temps, but not rapids increases or decreases.

I run my chiller at 77. I couldn't decide either so I put it right in the middle(77). Everything is do fine(IMO).

I use a Medusa controller (controls heaters/chiller and fans) keeps the temp within +/- .5 degrees of 79.

I just received mine in the mail (1/10hp) and I have set it to 77. I tends to fluctuate between 77-77.8, but has stayed within that range. I too had the same question because usually in the winter my tank was at around 78 and during the summer it would jump as high as 82. I purchased the chiller this past week because with the new halides I felt the temp would probably skyrocket to around 85 in the summer.

So you got the chiller hooked up! Glad to hear it.

I think a consistant temp is the main thing for most of the animals we keep, so I would set it in the high 70's. That way it won't have to come on as often so you won't be hearing the fan all the time.

Yep, finally. I had to put it in the garage for a few days at least, so that my wife could get used to seeing it. Then I put it in the utility room for further spousal acclimation. I should have taken more time....the second she saw it she said "what the heck is that, now you have to play music to them?" Regardless, it is up and running.

I set it at 80, but I am thinking of bringing it down some more over the next week. I just don't want it to be running all of the time either. Do you ever need to check the freon levels on them?

BTW, John, your frag is ready.

LOL, "acclimating your spouse". Love it!

I don't know about the freon question. I assume it's basically an air-conditioning unit with a water pathway running through it.

Ditto, 77.

I think we have a trend! :)

Lower temp is supposed to reduce RTN possibilities, higher temp supposedly can boost growth.

I'd like to know that too. I dropped the temp on mine to 78, it runs for quite a while before turning off. I think the 1/4 hp chiller I bought may be too small for my 150+ tank. I may need a 1/2 or 1 hp chiller after all.

I have my 1/4 HP Prime Inline set on 78 w/ 2 degree variance (kicks on if temp hits 80). I was at 77 when it was cooler, but as it warmed up it was kicking on more often than I liked at that temp.

Am I correct in thinking that the slower the flow through the chiller the better?

i have my chiller set at 80.my tank stays at 79.8-80.7 at the most.it just comes on way too much i think.maybe its because i have a smaller system?
