hey guys,

just had a quick question...

has anyone tried the fission nano skimmer from current usa? heres the info...

http://www.marineandreef.com/shoppro/fission_skimmer.htm

anyhow, if i were to buy this, which part is submersible? the cup would have to be above the water right? by being submersible, i would just need clearance from the top of the water and the bottomest part of the canopy?

also, i realize this isnt a big bad skimmer, but im exploring my options for my tank before i go ape**** and plumb a sump or something...

I have heard NOTHING good about this skimmer. Check out nanoreef and read the reviews for yourself. Personally I would save myself the trouble and look elsewere, unless you like fixing defective products, :) .

To each's own of course. Good luck! :)

guys, thanks for the quick responses...

the reason that im looking into this is b/c i have a tank that has built in lighting/filtration in the canopy. i really dont want to rig(nothing against the redneck skimmer ;) ) or reengineer this tank so im looking at alternatives to that route.

pics of my tank( actually one like mine) are located halfway on this page..

http://www.jeboaquarium.com/R3%20Series%20Micro%20Curved%20Glass%20Aquariums.h tm

mine is like the 5 set of pics down, in the middle. not the exact tank but very similar. the canopies or built a certain way and it would take ALOT of work to get a professional grade skimming system.

so....

does anyone know if all i would need is to clear the bottom of the collection cup to the bottomest part of the canopy? is that all i need?

The collection cup must be above the water level. I am not familar with the design of your Jebo so I do not know what amount of clearance you have. Just keep the previous in mind.

I think Alex has one in his store in his nano. The thing I don't like about those things is that they use suction cups and I have never had any luck with suction cups, they always come off and once they do they come off more often and eventually don't stick anymore.

Well, for 20 bucks you get a 20 buck skimmer. I have one in my JBJ 10gal. The plastic parts that connect the pump to the skimmer are junk. Current replaced them and those parts promptly broke. We fixed that by using flexible tubing. As far as skimming, well I think that is kind of a pipe dream. Maybe with some tweaking... I keep it going because it does do a good job of keeping the water areated.

I actually have a skimmer that I am about to list for sale for $20. I have not heard good or bad reports on this..so not sure what to expect. It is brand new. The box has been opened, but all of the parts are there. It is a visi-jet-ps (venturi) for up to 70gal. I already have a cpr bak pak and don't need this one.

Hey loans_n_fishes,
Back in the day when I was trying to cut corners on my first nano, I purchased the very same (visi-jet-ps) skimmer. I don't mean to ruin a possible sale, but that skimmer did not work at all. I ended up using the pump that came with it for circulation and trashing the rest. The skimmer is meant to go inside the aquarium and looks more like an eye-sore than anything. It also tends to dump a whole lot of microbubbles back into the tank because of the way it is set up (water gets pumped back into the tank from the bottom of the skimmer). Just my $0.02......

No offense taken. I appreciate any information that is available out there. 8)

After the Visi-jet, I purchased a Bak-Pak and have not looked back since. I have a total of 3 Bak-Paks in tanks at home now.

There has been alot of negs about this skimmer, but I have one in my aquapod and after clearing out the glue in the tip of the air hose and using a different sponge material, it does work pretty good, not great but good. Like others have found, it may not be a plug-an-play, but it does work on my 12g. If I had the room in my Nano, I would get one of those 6 foot jobs, but I don't. Many haven't tried it but "someone" said negative things about it on the internet, so they must be true! Others read the trash and pass it on as gospel! There are sooooo many skimmers that don't work for some but work great for others. Don't always believe what you read and always consider the source.

great info!

since its not an abundant amount of money (<$30) i think im going to do it. i mean, if it skims 1 pint of water a day thats 1 pint more than i skimmed with nothing at all. plus the fact that its the only thing that will fit.

I have it but don't use it anymore. I have the 12 gallon aquapod but it didn't work out in the back chamber. The light cover goes over the chambers too, and that stuffs the skimmer below the proper water level, thus it doesn't work very well back there. I moved it to the display part in the very front and it worked ok. It did a good job keeping the water clear and the quality good, but it put out microbubbles and there was always a fizz at the top of the skimmer which always made a mess. I think it might be better in a plain tank or something, but I didn't like it in my aquapod. I can't give it a bad review, but I wouldn't give it a good review either. Maybe neutral. But for as cheap as they are, it wouldn't hurt to try it out.

Well, options wise...

Aqua C is producing a Nano Remora that supposedly should be out soon.. they have withheld it twice from what i have read for poor performance. I think this is great, Aqua C obviously has a standard they think this product must meet and won't let it out until it does.

Another thought though...

Have you considered putting a TLF phosban reactor on the system and running the Tribase Carbon and Right NOW bacteria Richard and mark have been talking about? I can tell you the results I have seen from this stuff in the store so far are spectacular, and they are running a nano cube with the exact same setup.

something to think about.
