Quiet One pumps - NOT!

Unlike most of this hobby's suppliers, these folks don't seem to care. I got a BRAND NEW "Quiet One 9000" that makes about as much noise as an air pump you plug into your car lighter - you know the ones "BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ". No response whatsoever from these people, after several emails. The supplier agreed to swap it out - but now that I've found from other sources how crummy their service is, I'm not sure I want it!

We'll see how the replacement does. I bought this thing BECAUSE it was supposed to be quiet - it's in our BEDROOM. I thought about hooking it up to a timer to use as an alarm clock!

Quiet is a relative term in the world of pumps.

Next to a jet engine, it is very quiet. LOL!

Hope the replacement does better.

Well I FINALLY got a reply from the manufacturer:

" The 45db noise level is on the Quiet One 800 up to the Quiet One 6000"

Right. I sent him a note back with a copy/paste from THEIR website:

Here's the latest response from the Manufacturer:

"Well, this is not good. I apologize for misleading you and I will correct our website. I really apologize for this. Our recommended turnover rate on a fresh water aquarium is 2 times per hour and on a salt water aquarium 3 times per hour. Again, this needs to be communicated on our website! We suggest deducting 25% for loss of flow from the lift as well as the filtration system, plumbing, etc. in your example:
265 gallon aquarium (with sump)
Quiet One 9000 flow rate at zero head=2,328 gph
2,328 gph x 0.75=1,746 gph
1,746 divided by 265 gallons=6.58 turnover per hour
This is higher than we recommend. Heat transfer and noise become an issue at these higher turnover rates. In this case you may also need a refridgeration system to cool the water. Anyway, bottom line is if are not happy with the pump for any reason please return it for a refund or a smaller pump that is more properly sized to your aquarium"

Return it and get a PanWorld! 6-7x through the sump is fine, maybe a tad high (I like about 5x), but others run much higher! If you are keeping SPS, you need closed loops, Tunze's or other to get up to 20x-30x+.

3X turnover? I wonder if he has ever had a salt water tank and where those numbers come from? Did he say how many db the pump is supposed to create? Remember that db are logarthmic. That means that 55 db is 10X as loud as 45 db.

Well, here's the latest. I have a replacement 9000 on the way. Also, the manufacturer is sending me, free of charge, a 6000 - which is the next smallest pump 1506 gph - and it IS rated for 45db. We'll see how it goes!
