How can you tell male from females, and where can I read up more about these tiny little critters? Those look awesome.

males have a pouch that they raise the fry in. this pouch is just beneath their belly. so the female belly turns in at the bottom toward the tail like the horse in the foreground. the sh in the background apears to be a male (though he is a little unclear in the shot). his belly would slope gently and meet lower on the tail than the female. though sometimes this is difficult to see when they are younger.
