I am picking up a pump today that does 1000 gph. I definitely need more flow in the tank, but is this too much for my softies?

No it wont be too much at all. Is it going to be used as return from sump or what? That is only 13X turnover.

Will the flow be split, with a sqwd, return, closed loop? All depends on how you have it plumbed. Most softies still receive quite a bit of flow in the wild, plus it helps them to slough their slime coating when they need to.

My tank is SUPER basic. ^_^ No sump...just a HOT skimmer. I'm just sticking the new powerhead in for flow. I have one in there now that is around 400gph (had 2 of them, but had to put one on the unplanned 10gal addition to the family). I was planning on up-ing the flow anyway. Now it's pretty much an emergency situation.

Ok, so this isn't too much flow....Is it enough? I've got hair algae and cyno coming out of my ears. (Thank God not literally! :sick )

I am setting up that RO/DI unit, increasing the flow, and I have added a foxface and a large softball size of chaeto. My skimmer has acted oddly lately. I have it unplugged right now because it was bubling out of both chambers and filling up the cup FAST with tinted water. I'll take it down and tweak it again later.

Minght want to look at the seio line of pumps wide flow fairly cheap as well. Or if DIY skilled yu could mod a couple MJ900 and turn them into a stream type pump as well here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=717034&perpage=25&pagen umber=1 I am going to do this with at least one of my MJ900 for my 40g breeder tank.

nope, i have 1500gph on a 40g and that is just about perfect.

nope, i have 1500gph on a 40g and that is just about perfect. as long as you can create good random non-linear flow. is this a powerhead or a pump that you are adding? if it is a powerhead...i would go with 4 modified MJ900s or MJ1200s at around 300-400gph each rather than one stream of 1000gph
there is a much easier and rewarding mod for the MJs that only requires a saw, a drill and about 5 minutes of your time. the results are broad and alternating streams and increased flow. i can elaborate if you are interested

Another NOPE here. I had a 75g reef tank with an Amp Master 2100 (2700gph@0 head) as a sump return pump feeding two sea swirls, plus a Mag 12 as a closed loop pump feeding four return bulkheads and then 3 Maxi Jet 1200 power heads on a Red Sea wave maker. :)

120 gallon display with 2 ReefloDarts (3200 GPH PER dart)

6400 total GPH potentially.. I am to lazy to study how much I have lost in head pressure and right angles.
