View Full Version : Salt Analysis Project

Hello everyone,

MAAST has agreed to help in a salt analysis project that MARSH and Eric Borneman currently have going on. Basically, they are anyalyzing how fast several types of corals grow in several different brands of salt. This is different then previous projects that attempted to simply look at the chemical composition of salts. In scientific jargon, this is called a "bio-assay" since the they are measuring the biological impact of the salts.

Isis will be jumping in here and giving you more details. She is working with Eric and is the point person for MARSH. MAAST has agreed to help pay for some analytical test kits to help with the project. They are going through a lot of them and we are going to help with that end of the project.

They need your help too. What they need are samples of unopened containers of various different brands of salt. They do not need the whole container. What they would like is for you to donate 2000 gm (4.4 lb.) of salt from your next purchase of salt. Here are the brands they need: Tropic Marin, Reef Crystals, Coralife, Kent, HW Marine and Red Sea. Also, Isis asked me to tell you to that the date of purchase, place of purchase and the size of the container/bag must be documented. That information can be written with a Sharpie on a tightly sealed, large ziplock bag that has all the air removed. The original container/bag must be unopened when the sample is taken. That is, a freshly opened, new container. If you want to donate small packages that will remain unopened until we get them to Houston, that would be good too. If anyone has questions, please PM or email Isis.

You can PM her here or email her at kim.price@marshreef.com

This is a very worthwhile project that could really help us all. I would really like to see our members get behind this project. There is no data like this available, just the unproven claims of manufacturers. If nothing else it will provide some good info to add fire to our usual "best salt" debates. I would really appreciate anything you can do to help out. We will organize a drop off point so that we can get them shipped to, or picked up by Kim. If anyone makes regular trips to Houston that could deliver them, that would be appreciated also.

Sounds interesting. Have similar studies been done to IO and Oceanic as well? (only because I did not see them in your list)

I was wondering the same thing too about IO. That is the brand I use and have had good results from it.

I believe the study includes IO and Oceanic but they do not need any more samples of those.

Yea, those are pretty commonly available within MARSH members. Its the less commonly used ones that they need help obtaining.

Hi all, we are using IO and Oceanic, but we have enough now to get us throw the study.

It is impairative that the samples come from unopened containers so avoid any contamination from opening, including the affects on the moisture content. It is also important the quantity be at least 2kg since we are running into a problem with varying weights between samples. Plus if we have extra, we could use the remaining samples for analysis if the funds become available. It is better to have more than enough, than not enough and that sample not being used.

On a side note, we are in desperate need of more herbivores, like astreas. We have had several mortalities and we are now running low on replacements. There is also a need for gracilaria if anyone has an abundance.

If you have any questions, please let me know. We are constantly gathering data and always in need of support since Eric and I are doing this on our own time and money.

Kim,

Can you post the links to the study project info on MARSH so that anyone interested and check it out? I know you have a forum about it on the website too.

I have a brand new, unopened bucket of Kent (but soon to be opened...). Just let me know what to do!

Bill,

Just weigh out 4.4 lbs. of salt into a 1 gal. ziplock bag immediately after opening it. If you don't have a scale, let me know. Squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible. Write the brand of salt, date of purchase, place of purchase and the size of the container on the outside of the bag with a Sharpie pen. Let me know when its ready to go and we'll work out a drop off.

If you are unsure on how much to fill the zip lock bags, anything over 3/4 full is good.

any plans on testing seachem's new salt?

any plans on testing seachem's new salt?Actually there are several others we would like to test. Unfortunately, we ran out of room when we started this. Hopefully if we do this again, we will have better funding and more time to committ, let alone space. This type of experiment is difficult to say the least, but then again bia-assays are always fun.
