300-500gph is pretty common, but im sure you could look at the manufacturers website, or call the store that you bought it from. But its a good idea to find out because a pump thats too slow accumulates air bubbles in the U-tube, and too fast and it overflows the box.

If it's too fast then what can one do besides purchasing a lower gph rated pump?

Most likely 400GPH.
What is the size of the u-tube and the bulkhead coming out of it?

Put a ball valve on the pressure side of the pump to tone it down.

The drain lines/ bulkhead are usually 1"D and will accomodate lots of flow, the problem is usually the overflow box itself, they have a bad reputation. Also make sure to inspect it weekly to clean/remove trapped air bubbles in the u-tube as necessary.

Or get a second overflow box if the flow is too high, thats a good safety measure!

Well I had the stock overflow for a Proclear slimline 60 and bought a larger one. I just wanted it to filter better. Its longer up and down then the
original overflow. SO it's much bigger. It works good, but I do get bubble in the J tube so I thnk i must go with a bigger pump thanks.
