Tribase Carbon - RN bacteria denitrification

Richard - I understand that you presently are using tribase carbon in a fuge with a great deal of success. I have the perfect 40g set up to try the same. can you tell me where to get the carbon ;)

We are building a ~ 300g system so i am going to plumb it to try the aerobic process. My plan right now is to use a series of PVC tubes to contain carbon and PH rock. I will install them horizontally over the sump and plumb them so that i can backflush during water change or into a micro mesh sock. Do you think that you could get Snake to offer advice in this thread?

Also do you know if the same bacteria cultures are in the Coral Food?? Does the coral food help the carbon bed activate faster??

Ah dang it! I meant to edit that in the coral food post but forgot. The coral food does not contain any live bacteria. That was a misunderstanding on my part of what the manufacturer was telling me. I'll go fix that now.

OK, I'll bite, what does it contain?

I believe Richard is simply using the carbon as a substrate in his fuge, the same way that you would a DSB. What is PH rock? What is the purpose of the PVC tubing you are setting up there? That sounds like it would be in the way most of the time. I know onw of my biggest problems is my lack of ability to get into and do work under my stand. Why are you backflushing it? To remove solids? Why not just put in a physical filter in front of the carbon? A filter sock or some filter floss would work well.
