Cleaning Test Equipment

Whenever I am done with a water test I rinse out the test tubes with tap water. Is this ok or will it throw off the next test since I'm not rinsing using RO/DI? Also, when you are done using your refractometers, do you wipe off the lens or rinse it with RO? I'm probably just looking too much into this, but I'm just curious what everyone else does since I'm still new.

I keep a spray bottle full of RO/DI in the area where I do my tests. I sray it inside the test viles out as a final rinse. The spray bottle is also really good for cleaning water spots off your tank too.

You can get a spray bottle at Wal-Mart for a couple of bucks. I also have one with vinegar for cleaning pumps. If you have more then one, its essential that you label them clearly.

Before testing, rinse out the vials using the same water you will be testing.

Yes, I wipe off my refractometer with a paper towel, and rinse it off good with RO/DI about once/week.

When ever I use glassware or plasticware in the lab to test water parameters I use soap and water to wash and rinse it, I also scrub the surface with a pipecleaner, sponge, towel, etc. This, I believe, is the best, inexpensive, way to keep organics from building up on glass and even on plastic if done before the water dries in the container. When you do calcium testing there can be a buildup of "stuff" on the glass or plastic, which can usually be removed by a good dose of vinegar and then wash with soap and water. If you don't see a buildup you don't really have to use the vinegar.
