I JUST got home from a night out

here is the odd thing that happened. i walked into my bedroom where it was DARK except the moonlights on the tank. on the FRAG PLUG was a NEON green flash. there was NOTHING else on and when i turned the lights on it looked like a worm but them when i looked for it with the camera it was gone. it is about 1/2-3/4 in long and it FLASHES!!!!!!

has anyone ever seen this and is it good bad or who cares.

Alot of marine organisms are bioluminescent, like fireflies. The one species are most people are most familiar with is the electric flame scallops. Of course there is no way to identify what this guy was but that would be my best guess. Most sailors are familiar with the green glow that can be seen in the wake of a ship at night. This is caused by certain kinds of plankton that flash when disturbed. There is no telling what this guy was. If you interested, here is an article on bioluminescent polychaetes (which include bristleworms).

"Alot of marine organisms are bioluminescent, like fireflies. The one species are most people are most familiar with is the electric flame scallops...." that what i thought, however the one we have is not bioluminescent, it flashes the blue, but only in some type of light. is that true for all of them? is this an indication he's not happy? or is the blue color actually caused by chromatophores, like in other mollusks. i dont judge him (the scallop) he's just confuses me.

now pinecone fish are another topic, but who has the money for that thing?!?!?

in darker water the flash attracts photoplancton and other such foods to the scallep itself, thats what ive heard.

When we were sailing in Belize last summer, one night we had soccer ball sized bioluminescent blobs (maybe like giant cabbage heads)lighting off around the boat. Kind of like lightning flashes. At about 3 am I got up to check our anchor, and next to the boat in about 7 feet of water was a GLOWING blob about TWENTY FEET across on the bottom. Kind of like all of the blobs got together in a HUGE mass. The next day we were at the marine biology school, and no one there knew what it was...

Hey, it was kind of spooky. Out in BFE, the closest civilization is 40 miles away, NEW MOON, on a 43 foot sailboat. Just 2 families... NO ONE around...
