I have a 175w MH light on the way for my 29g tank. It mounts on the wall and I will probably put it about 10" off the water. I also plan to have a fan blowing across the top to keep it cool.

My question arises from the canopy. I was told by the person I bought the light from that he does not use a canopy at all in order to keep heat down and allow gas exchange. This seems fine, but I'm concerned with fish jumping out. I wanted to get a royal gramma and sixline wrasse, but both appear to have some tendency to jump. Does anyone else have a setup w/ no canopy? Is there any sort of netting that I could use to keep the fish in? I know I could use eggcrate, but I'd rather not. I hear it sometimes melts and will block light. Thanks in advance.

I have no canopy and no glass and have never had anything jump.

My canopy is open on three sides and I haven't ever had anything jump out.

Well that's comforting. I guess I'm scared to take a chance. Maybe I'll figure out some sort of netting that will prevent any fish that might get some crazy ideas.

I have an enclosed canopy on 3 sides and have had several fishf jump out. I even had a oscellaris clown jump through a cooling fan (it was off at the time). It just depends on what you have in your tank. Some fish are notorious jumpers such as hawkfish and some wrasses. My next hood is going to be open on the back but have some sort of screen on the back. I call it a fish trampoline. My other hood is completely enclosed and guess what? I have never had a fish jump out of it.
