I have been digging much of my tank inhabatits out of my overflow boxs lately, so to prevent them from getting in there I glued a wire fence around the border. The only thing stiff enough to use was metal, should I be concerned with the metal contaminating my water?

I bought the plastic screen that is used to keep junk out of the rain gutters. They have it at Home Depot. Works great and very inexpensive.

there's a white plastic mesh you can get at craft stores, it's in sheets about the same size as a sheet of paper.

not only that but the metal will corrode and rust especially in salt water.

Is the Nylon & plastic stiff enough to stand on it's own, like the metal?

I got my mesh and just folded it over and it makes a snug fit in the overflow. You just have to clean it all the time, seems to be an ideal place for algae and pods to grow.
