How much are you looking to get? Sometimes if you have a smaller tank and don't need as much its cheaper to get some in town rather than shipping. On the other hand it would be nice for people to chime in with the sites to compare ;)

Before I discovered MAAST I bought LR from two places. WWW.marinedepotlive.com and http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=393Both place were very nice rock. It has done super. It looks like the price of rock has gone up w/everything else in the world.CB Pets has some and Wolf Reef usually has some. Also Fishy Business has some that he advertised for sale on Monday.

..I better start helping around before people realize im really a **** ..LOL..
...I wouldn't get LR online. The downside to it..you cant pick the shapes nor the quality. Some sites say "Ultra live rock..lots of coralline algea and full of good stuff"...which is not true. I wouldnt get live rock online unless I was buying at least 200 lbs; that way the price would drop to like $2.00 a lb but you still have shipping to worry about. I dont think you can spend $7.00 bucks a pound at Alamo (maybe more) yet. So why dont you work with what you have? Go through the list that Richard gave you...

Yeah most people who start up LARGE tanks, 150 and above, seem to go the online route because they can get large quantities at fairly decent deals. The problem is everytime I see a shipment of them, the rocks are extremely large and would not really fit in your 55 (unless you take a chisel and hammer to them). Your best route is hit up a bunch of places and find the pieces that work best for your aquascaping plan. You do have a plan don't you???

of course, i want to try and build an up slope starting from the bottom and reaching from one side to the other so the back of the tank is completely covered with rock but to where my fish will still have room to swim up front and in between the rock. i would like to cover that whole wall of rock with nothing but pretty coral and maybe some day down the road i will work on clams.

I would shop around town. That way you can pick the pieces that you like. If you can buy cured go for it. I found that most places say cured but it should be cured a little more. give it another 1-2 weeks and it will be ready.

You do have a plan don't you???
Thats very important. You need to have an idea of what you want your tank to look like. You need to know what kind of shapes you want or how you want to put them..Me for example am very picky of liverock..(i was, i have plenty) so all my pieces are very peculiar and fit like a puzzle, so, it worked great for my type of aquascape. So, you need to know what you want..

Here is a link to the guy I have used 4 times now.
http://www.floridaliverock.com/
You place the order then he calls you asks what your putting it in what shapes you want etc. etc...
Drop ships to the airport as an option which makes it pretty cheap (in comparison)
This is wher I would go if starting a tank. But if just adding some LFS is the winner.

As Diego said, buying it online you don't see what you get first, and these guys are VERY good at advertising ;) I bought over 700 lbs in bulk from Tamer (AqWarehouse) and he used a known distributor. It was fairly good rock, but not "Hand Picked". Also, I got about 10% of the weight in "rubble". Some of the "better advertisers" will dump in as much as 25% rubble to get rid of it at a hefty price :angry
I would call around to LFSs for pricing, and watch the for sale forum for 20-30 lbs worth.

..Being an a--h0le isnt what i do best, its just the way i am. Its very rewarding..lol
Do your research on liverock first..you know there are many types of it... right??..They all offer different shapes and color to the hobby, so..Id do that first..

One more thought. If you need to build a base underneath to get the slope, you can use "Dead Rock" - basically LR that has been dried out & cleaned. "Reef Bones" is a brand name of these if you want to search for an on-line suplier, and price is like $1.25/Lb. Also, you can build up a framework of PVC underneath to stack your rock on, and use less rock. Lots of folks have taken the PVC approach - you can probably find some DIY articles on this here on MAAST or ReefCentral under the DIY forums.
