View Full Version : RO unit hook up

I'm just curious. Where does everyone hook up their RO units? We don't have a utiliy sink. The bathrooms don't seem like the right place. And, if your wife/girlfriend is anything like my wife, the kitchen is just out of the question. I've tried, "What about a source of pure drinking water?" route, but that doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. Funny thing is, she doesn't even know what a unit would cost.
Any comments?

I have mine in an enclosure on the patio. Ue a light bulb for heat and it is insulated. Did not freeze last night or the night before. :P

Never thought about the laundry room! Hey, Darth. Do you store the water inside somewhere? Even if if doesn't freeze it's still got to be way to cold to add directly to the tank. And what about in the summer? Even in the garage (Pete), the water has to be too hot to use directly. Isn't this a pain?

my RO unit is in the garage, and that is where my reservoir is for mixing salt water, but it is in the back, close to the house. the temp. is never an issue, cold or hot, if it is off by too much, i just bring the buckets of water in a few hours before i do a water change. also, i run the drain out thru the wall to the tomato garden so we don't just waste that water.

No not by the time its mixed and added to the tank. I mix my water and change and always have done it that way. I dont match the tank and I dont aerate.

I have a 40 gallon container and inside the container I have a 400 watt heater. :blink I also keep 6 gallons in the house for top off. The temp is not too far off. but the laundry room sounds cool. I never thought of that.

I use the outdoor option with the garden hose attachment. Since my window is right by a *****et outside, its kinda easy to set up. I put a 2 way outlet on the *****et so that I can have a dedicated hose for my ro/di unit and another so we can still use the garden hose without disconnecting the unit. I just run a water line through the window and into my 37 gallon trash can in my closet for water storage. When I'm done I just pull the line back through the window (so its not in there all the time). The past few days I ran on the side of caution and put the unit in the garage just so the freezing temps don't mess up the filters/membrane. It looks like it will be warm enough to do a water change and fill up the trash can today. ;)

Okay. So, now, how do I get the go ahead from the wife to buy a unit? Like I've said, I tried the pure drinking water idea, and that didn't work. I currently use dechlorinated tap water. I only have some mushrooms and polyps and a small leather coral in the tank along with some small fish. But, I battle with cyanobacteria outbreaks. I know the RO water would help alot.
Oh, by the way. She really doesn't like the tank, either. It's not like she hates it, but if it were up to her, it would be gone. Any ideas now?!?

Lets start with she doesnt want it so therefor she doesnt want to spend money on it.
Let her know how much it is going to cost per month and yearly to use up time-gas-energy to run to where ever you will get the water as well as the containers and cost.
You can get a decent unit on ebay for less than 100.00
Now with the savings $$$ as well as with the time saved you can take her out more often !!! :lol

How is everyone moving the water they keep mixed in the closets, garages, or whereever to the tanks?

Mine hasn't liked it for 21 years. But after all that we agree to disagree, I get half the living room for 3 aquariums and she gets the other half for furniture? I make up my RO water in the wash room and make sure it's not hooked up when she needs to soak clothes. She has me well trained on that one. I used to have a drinking water system hooked up in the kitchen but the tap connection sprung a leak and water was everywhere and lets just say 21 almost stopped at 14. Sure glad she doesn't read MAAST!

Pump with a long hose from the garage to the 40 gallon trash can i put by the tank for mixing... bit of a pain, i may move it to the laundry room.
