View Full Version : Flame Scallop...

Hey all

I decided to purchase a flame scallop in order to add some diversity to my tank. Let me tell you, the scallop has been hopping across my tank in every direction. This little stinker is active!

I was fully aware that I had to target feed the flame scallop since they are not photosynthetic (sp?) and from what I understand they don't really like bright lighting. I feed Fritz brand Invertabrate Banquet. I dillute it with a bit of water and use a syringe to aim the food towards the scallop.

Here are my concerns:

How often should I feed?

Will the scallop be able to filter feed on the micro organisms in my tank or only larger food particles?

The scallop decided to make his home behind my rock work, any ideas how to keep him out front? (It is really tough to feed him back there).

Thanks for your help!

I never had any luck with a scallop but never was told to target feed. Good luck!

Hey Fishy

This is what Dr. Foster and Smith had to say, "The flame scallop is non-photosynthetic and requires supplementation with phytoplankton, and organic foods... provided by using a small pipette/straw to dispense the food upstream of its location. Each Red Flame Scallop needs to be fed individually."

I did not mean to discount anything you were told. Simply put the person I used to buy from knows about as much as reef tanks as I do rocket science. I look back at some of the things I WAS doing and wonder how I ever made it by.

Didn't mean to come off like that.

I just put the link up there to educate the MAAST population, no shots were taken! :D
I should have put a few smilies in that post! :P
Fishy you are cool beans in my book! :shades

Has anyone had luck with one of these, lol?

Sorry cbianco. I may have had too much cough syrup and my thought process is a little sideways. Good luck with the flame. Keep us posted :D

Do the blue strips really glow when the lights are out, lol? I have heard that the "electric" part of the scallop is not that exciting. I know what you mean about under the rocks! As soon as I put my scallop in the tank, he hopped to a more dimmly lit area.

Did you research feeding?

cbianco, there are two types of flame scallop, the electric flame scallop is the only one tha thas the 'electric' mantle, and they are even rarer in the trade than the normal flame scallops.

actually during the day you can see it and yes its pretty neat.... well my pump return is actually right where the scallop hides so about every 2 or 3 days I put cyclonese (that red bar) a small chunk into my return pump area and it puts it right in that area... everything in my tanks gets excited when that stuff is put in....

I think I remember reading somewhere that cyclopzeeze was to large for flame scallops....

its all lil tiny red dots after it goes through the pump :) I don't know what I could give it that would be smaller...

Do you remember where you read that, lol? I was looking for more info on these scallops but I can only find retail sites.

:( Has anyone had success with flame scallops? :(

I do, tahitian blend, or any other green water product. phyto plankton is FAR FAR FAR smaller than cyclopzeeze. But you know what? general health is the best indicator for what works!

i bought one when i first set up my tank about 2 years ago, before i knew they didn't fair well in captivity( and to research FIRST!!) everyone said it would die in short order. i did some research, i think on WWM, and found that their normal lifespan in the wild is only about 2-3 years. so, it's entirely possible that many of the flame scallops that die in captivity are dieing from old age. anyways, mine began wasting away about 2-3 months ago, and finally gave up the ghost several weeks back, after almost 2 years. i think that was a pretty good run. i found mine would stay put when provided with a well shaded area with pretty brisk flow, near the bottom of the tank.

It is nice to see that a few of you are having success with the scallop. I will continue to target feed my scallop. I just wish he wold stay put. It is sort of like asking a two year old to stay still, lol.
