I am drawing down to the close getting ready to mix water for the new tank, and I ran accross SeaChem's add for their reefsalt in a magazine.
now, Seachem has (in my eyes) proven they make top notch stuff, purigen for instance is amazing stuff. And I notice that they almost always have a guy answering questions at reefcentral. I am about to pop over there and see what I can find out about the salt but figured I would ask my MAASTards first...
anyone use this stuff? and if so, what are your impressions?

Oh, and as of now I plan to use reefcrystals per Richard's advice...

This brand new stuff that was introduced at MACNA this year. Since I have only used it once, I can't tell you how good it is.

I think they have a full page add in the new Marine Depot catalog. They make a Reef and a Marine salt for the different setups.

i dont know how good the salt is, but i do know marine depot is advertising it pretty good.i just ordered some stuff and the packing slip is printed on back of a seachem reefsalt flyer.it seems to have a buffer that maintains a 8.4 ph.

I did use the reefcrystals when I started mixing water this week, but the yellow clumps of stuff in the mix make me weary...

Yellow clumps? Maybe it's das vitamins. Never seen clumps but I can smell the vitamins when I mix it up.
Instant Ocean is...
A basic salt, little low on some things for "reef" levels, but the standard salt for as long as I can remember. Consistency from batch to batch: Very good from my experience. Manufactured by Aquarium Systems for Aquarium Systems.
Reef Crystals is....
Instant Ocean +. Start with IO and add extra carbonates, trace elements, vitamins and stuff. Alk & Mg are great. Ca still a bit low but not too bad. Consistency from batch to batch: Very good from my experience. Manufactured by Aquarium Systems for Aquarium Systems. This is the salt I'm using now and quite happy with.
Kent Reef Salt is...
Instant Ocean +. Start with IO and add extra carbonates, trace elements, vitamins and stuff. Consistency from batch to batch: Not so good from my experience. A good bucket tests out perfect IMO, Ca ~450, kH ~3 meq/l, Mg 1350. Other buckets have tested exactly like IO. Manufactured by Aquarium Systems for Kent Marine. Quit using this salt because of the inconsistent results from bucket to bucket.
Seachem Reef Salt is...
Instant Ocean +. Start with IO and add extra stuff provided by Seachem. Consistency from batch to batch: Unknown. Manufactured by Aquarium Systems for Seachem. Don't know how it will test out as far as numbers go but I do know it will be higher in boron than other salts. A very good thing according to Seachem chemists, not so hot according to Randy Holmes Farley. There's a thread on RC somewhere where the seachem main chemist dude is duking it out with RHF. Both quoting techinal research and such so who knows IMO. Seachems a reputable company IMO and I like their products. My biggest concern with any salt is consistency batch to batch. Hopefully the Aquarium Systems guys will remember to put the right products in when they are making their competitors salt for them. We'll see....

Here we go again! Bio-assy,,,, Tropic Marin,,,, Oceanic,,,, and now,,,, Seachem! Whats next!? Its a mixed up crazy world I tellya! Being the anti-bandwagoneer that I am, I dont think Ill ever switch from ReefCrystals, kalk and B-Ionic, a proven combination.

Very cool Richard, Ive been trying to get my hand on some Reef Crystals but havent seen anybody selling it lately (or maybe i havent been out enough)..Ive been using IO for a while and i guess its better than oceanic, it raised my alk and Ca. levels like crazy..I want to give Reef Crystals a try, but this new salt looks to good to pass up..

well Jim I don't have nearly as much to risk as you! :) I do have a burning desire to provide the absolute best i can for my critters, and future critters, and someone has got to try that.
I tried oceanic, I liked how fast it mixed, but I know I got one of those infamous 'bad batches'.
I don't know as to say what I am doing is jumping on a bandwagon, more along the lines of experimenting. I like Seachem products, everyone of them has been exactly what they said it would be, no more, no less. they have never advertised a magic bullet, and IMO have a pretty darn good track record of customer service. take a look at the difference between Seachem and Oceanic based on what richard just said.
oceanic gets accused of a bad batch and they turtle up, seachem's recipe for salt mix is attacked and they vigorously defend their mix w/ scientific research. I like that.
<--seachem fan. I will give the salt a chance.
If richard is willing, i will bring in some RO/DI water mixed to 1.023 in to the store w/ my first batch and we can test it out and publish our findings here.

Experimenting is ok to a point, eventually you have to evaluate the data and make a decision. If what you are doing equals the results you desire, then hey, go for it!
