The red tree sponge is a very pretty aquarium addition but also very hard to keep alive. Some here will disagree with me but I have gone 0 for 2. In my opinion they are not easy to keep. Flow and food are very important to their survival.

Yeah, sponges are very difficult to keep alive in an aquarium. Unfortuantely, the white is not mold...it is dying sponge. Your best bet is going to be to start feeding it...the problem is that once you begin feeding a tank enough to support a sponge you're WAY overfeeding your tank. If it is in a small tank watch it carefully, they can seriously pollute the water when the begin to die. Good luck.

i have an orange sponge that was starting to do that, so i started adding ZoeCon once a week, and it came back. just becarefull not to add too much, and be aware that it will shut down your skimmer for a few hours.

I have 3 real big sponges in my tank, one was dying off when i bought it but i brought it back to life feeding DT's..just squirt some phyto over the sponge..give it some time and it will get better.
